Question about 2003 Jaguar S-Type

Open Question

2003 s-type 4.2 L V-8, restricted performance message, 62,500 miles. occurred coincidently with letting fuel level get to point where low fuel indicator came on. also went to different gas station than usual. local mechanic thinks it could be fuel pump. my first thought is change fuel filter and go from there. suggestions? just finished 2000 miles driving in last 14 days, car performed flawlessly on those trips.

scanner gave codes for misfire on 6 cylinders, fuel pressure was 65 psi with fuel pump performance @35%. mechanic said that all other read outs looked normal.

  • dspace Dec 10, 2009

from what i know about fluid dynamics if the fuel rail pressure is measured before the fuel filter and it is partially plugged that could explain why the engine might not be seeing the proper fuel flow to give optimum performance.

had fuel filter replaced and it appeared to be original although it was a motorcraft brand. car runs okay but after a short drive the restricted performance message appeared and the mechanic again hooked up to read fault codes. had a P0174, system too lean on bank 2; also P1582 flight recorder data is..
this mechanis thinks it could be an O2 sensor which he says would be ~$500 to replace.

as i stated before the fuel pressure reading is too high, possibly caused by fuel pressure regulator being bad or the vacuum hoses to it, in any case change the fuel filter and have the fuel pressure tested again should be 43psi at idle, thanks and get back to me. Thanks Ray

  • Ray Keckeisen May 11, 2010

you may also want a second opinion, fuel pump at 35% with higher than normal pressure,

  • Ray Keckeisen May 11, 2010

sounds like the fuel pressure is way off, should be 43psi at idle, please give the specific codes

need the codes from the ecm to help, have the car scanned with a scanner capable of reading european cars, get back to me with the codes we'll go from there

SOURCE: restricted performance under load

Some times, it only takes a good cleaning of the Mass Air Flow Meter to get it working again. Also clean out the full air intake and down the throttle body, especially the butterfly flap. There are special cleaners for both the Mass Air Flow Meter, and the Throttle Body. Be sure to use the correct ones as there are special coatings that can be damaged by the wrong cleaners.

SOURCE: check engine light is on,display says restricted performance

Anything can cause the check engine light to go on from a loose gas cap, to a transmission issue. When the onboard computer detects an issue, it will restrict performance so as to not damage the engine any further. An Oil change won't affect this light. The only way to determine the cause of the light is to have the computer scanned with an OBD-II tool (Autozone does this for free) to determine the codes and cause for the light. You can also clear the light with the OBD-II tool, but if the problem is still there, the light will just come back on

SOURCE: 1 Red and 1 Amber warning light and message Restricted performance

Go to Auto Zone and ask the to run a diagnostic with their OBD-11 computer. This may still be a free service. Write down the error code/codes displayed. This should help pinpoint the correct sensor.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu 54k miles - replaced fuel pump assembly & now some dash warning lights and clock stay on. Any ideas?

Replacing a fuel pump has nothing to do with instrument cluster lights or the clock staying on. Unless you shorted wires , did you disconnect the negative battery cable before hand ?
The body control module (BCM) performs the following functions:
• A/C compressor request
• A/C cooling fan
• Exterior and interior lighting control
- Daytime running lights (DRL)
- Automatic lighting control
- Fog lamps
- Interior lighting
• Battery rundown
• Chime
• Gauge control
• Instrument cluster indicator control
• Fuel gauge control
• Temperature gauge control
• Theft deterrent
Interpreting all of the driver warnings sent by the control modules on the class 2 serial data line
Sending the information to the instrument cluster in the form of a SPI serial data bus message
The following list of messages are sent by the BCM to the instrument cluster:
• Fuel gauge position
• Temperature gauge position
• Oil pressure
• Low engine coolant
• Check oil
• Volts
• High beam
• Low fuel
• High temperature
• Washer fluid level low
• Door ajar
• Seat belt
Check the fuel level sensor wires , the fuel level sensor is a input to the BCM .

Oil light coming on on low revs and going off on high revs what may be the cause the car has just been serviced and after driving 3 miles the light came on

Be sure that the oil level is correct in the engine. If it is correct, I would call the facility that performed the service and explain your concerns to them. Could just be coincidence and that it has a defective oil pressure sending unit. (that is the electrical part the makes the oil light &/or guage work.) If the problem wasn't there prior to having the service performed , I would definitely have the repair facility be aware of it and see what they are proposing to do.
If it is low on oil add oil of the correct type until full on the dipstick and see if problem persists. I would also call the repair facility if the oil level is very low and explain the condition to them.

S type year 03 car gave a couple of splutters going round a roundabout the engine warning light came on and the words restricted performance appeared . i drove the car home about 6 miles and it seems ok ,...

Get the codes read as it could be anything. The car will run with this warning up until the fault goes to the next level - then it will shut you down. Get the codes read as it may be something small like a sensor or even a bad connection - from the ''splutters'' it sounds like it may be fuel/air based. hope this helps-good luck.

Jaguar s-type restricted performance

I had the same problem. Restricted performance and running rough at 3000 RPM. I have an OBDII code reader and found that the problem was in the air mass flow sensor, which is just after the air filter. I pulled this out and found it was dirty and had butterfly wings in it. The last shop where I had the oil changed replaced the filter for me but put in the wrong size. Close but no cigar. Bought some *** Flow Sensor cleaner at auto store and fixed the problem. Get an OBDII reader with the ability to erase the codes. Comes in real handy.
