Basically, your on board computer is telling you your catalytic converter is not working properly. As you know, you have a sensor in front and in back of the converter. The computer compares the waveforms from each sensor. If the sensor waveform before and after the cat are the same, then the cat is not working. You should have an analysis of the waveforms at each sensor analyzed at a shop and, if they are the same, the dealer should replace the cat if it is still under warranty. Most common would be the O2 sensor after the Catalytic converter has failed and will need to be replaced. It takes about 15 min to replace and any muffler shop can replace the O2 sensor for you.

Good luck

Something is wrong with your exhaust sytem. it does not nessesarilly mean the car will not run or give out. But it means that the O2 sensors or catalytic converter are signaling the computer unit that your car is emmiting bad exhaust fumes. If you live in a state where emmisions are required , this can be rough for you . Because your car will fail the emmissions test. Check the Oxygen Sensors. Both the (input sensor , where it goes into the exhaust pipe ) and the output, the sensor located on the exhaust pipe itself. If not, i'm afraid you will eventually need to replace the catalytic converter. If you can get past the emmissions test, it does not matter. your car will still run. but if you have to have it checked, then it can get expensive. If I were you, I would leave it and take a chance , but if I had to do anything, I would replace the catalytic converter.

most catalytic converters last the lifetime of the vehicle my best bet would be to go the cheapest way first and check your egr valve and o2 sensors

Hi, i have a 2000 rodeo with p0420 catalyst insuffienct code. I have change all o2 sensors and take out the convertors.

the pcm has to monitor the converters, if they are not in place this code will never go away, also it is a federal offense to remove them , so I suggest having new ones installed

Fuel filling clicks off repeatedly when not full

i had the same problem on my 2003 vibe... they replaced the filler tube also and it didn't fix it then they replaced the entire fuel filling system including the venting tupe and located a bee hive honeycomb in the vent line and that was what was causing the problem and have no problems since. hope this helps.
