Question about 1997 Ford Contour

1 Answer

My contour is starting at times and when I drive it for a while it will not start. i thought it was my alternator and that was checked this checked out fine. I had the cable cleaned etc.. all of that it will run as long as I don't drive to much but sometimes it will get hot and then it will not start or it even will allow me to drive at night for a while and be fine but then it goes right back to not starting. Now I'm taking the alternator back off because i have pretty much looked at it all any suggestions?

That's just it. I can go out and get in it tomorrow and it will start. I go to work and drive it back home it's fine. If I have to go to the store or somewhere it will stop on me and not say or do anything. Let it sit for a bit and most times I go back to it and it will start as if nothing happend to it. Very strange I have not seen anything like this before. Yesterday we let it run for a very long time and went to turn it off and start it again and it would not do anything again. Now perhaps if it sits today and I try tomorrow it will start again. And it would seem if this would be the alternator I have driven it with the lights and and stuff on it will drive like that a while then nothing again.mmmmm

Will it crank/turn over when you turn the key? Or is it silent? or just a clicking noise?

A hot starter will not work. It is an electric motor and electric things can have problems when hot that they do not have when cold. So letting the car sit will let it cool down, also usually cooler at night.

If you remove the starter most auto parts stores can bench test it for for free. Many repair shops will do an on car starter check for a small fee.

Have your alternator checked. If one (or more) of the diodes in the alternator is shorted, you can get similar symptoms, and it won't charge the battery either.

I have a 1999 Contour, it died while driving. Has power, no start

Most the time the engine dies while driving is due to a crankshaft sensor failure. When this fails, the engine can't be started since the ECM doesn't know the location of TDC to provide proper ignitions. Have a shop check out and replace this part then you are good to be back on the road. Good luck.

Ford Contour possible short

Check the alternator is not faulty.
The battery terminal voltage when engine is running should be approx 14.5V with headlights or venilation blower motor running.
The battery light indicator 'on' usually means the alternator is not charging.

Start with changing the alternator. If it continues after that try to find a used computer from a wrecking yard. The ECM/computer is very expensive at the dealership and your local autopart store can't order them.

1998 ford contour start up, alternator? battery?

may i ask? when you jump start from doner car battery?? do you connect battery to battery with leads? reason for querie is the correct method is=connect leads to doner terminals on battery then on your car connect +LEAD TO YOUR BATTERY BUT THE NEGATIVE LEAD TO THE ENGINE ENSURE GOOD CONTACT ? if engine starts then ? you will have to check the earth lead from battery to engine connection it may be loose or deteriated ? doing the above test you are using doner battery power SO to check your cars battery ?and whether it is an earth connection fault? just connect 1xjump lead from your cars neg terminal on battery and the other end to the engine providing a good suplimentary earth to enable starter to function properly due to its high amps load needed if it works? check as explained above ? please update back on progress if any? good luck
