Question about 1988 Honda Civic 2 Door

1 Answer

I HAVE A 88 HONDA CIVIC, IT IS HAVING TROUBLE STARTING. THE FUEL PUMP DOES NOT KICK ON WHEN I TURN THE KEY. IF I PUT GAS DOWN THE THROTTLE BODY THING IT START AND STAYS RUNNING. CHECKED RELAY, CHANGED THE INGNITION CONTROL MODULE. I GET CODE 15 FROM THE ECU. WHEN I FIRST CHANGED THE IGNITION CONTROL MODULE IT WORKED FINE BUT THEN IT STARTED ACTING UP AGAIN, ALSO GETTING SAME CODE FROM ECU. IS IT GETTING SHORTED OUT SOMEWHERE OR IS IT A POSSIBLITY THAT THE NEW IGNITION CONTROL MODULE I PUT IN IT IS DAMAGED NOW?

The fuel pump relay is burried under the dash. The new one will help you find the old one. It is bigger than e regular relay.
It is on the drivers side Ithink.
If you don't hear the pump when you turn the key it will never start. All of those relays fail because these cars outlast them.

The only matter there should be in the throttle body is air. The throttle body in no way has anything other than "nothing" in it. The liquid you see could be the gasoline you threw into the throttle body.

Getting back to your problem. Do NOT have someone looking down the throttle body while you are trying to start the engine. That person may receive a haircut he will never forget! Get the battery charged. Try to start the engine because even though you think you put too much gas in the throttle body, it may start.

The tricky part. If the engine starts and runs for a few seconds, then you are having a problem with fuel delivery and that is the fuel pump most of the time but not always.. If it does not start at all, try one more time to pour gasoline into the throttle body, hold your foot about 1/2 way down on the pedal and then try again to start it. If it still doesn't start, it's time to check for spark.

You'll need to make sure you have spark to the plugs, then try spraying starting fluid into the throttle body to substitute for fuel.
If it will start on starting fluid, you would need to check fuel pressure with a gauge, and check the injectors for power and ground pulse.

My 1998 Delta 88 LS Oldsmobile is not starting. I have replaced the fuel filter and checked the fuel pump relay fuse and also the other fuse that is located in the kick panel, got any suggestions?

First lets start out with finding out if its a fuel problem or electrical as in no spark. You need to pull a plug wire off and if you have a tester put it on the wire if you dont have a tester put a screw driver in the wire and place it close to metal on the engine but not touching and crank over the engine if you see spark then your good there if no spark then thats where your problem is going to be. If there was spark then squirt a shot of starting fluid into the intake or throttle body and turn over the engine if it starts then dies then fuel delivery is going to be where your problem is at.Have some one turn the ignition key to the run position dont try to start it just turn it to the run position while you listen at the gas tank remove the fuel cap and place your ear as close to it as possible and listen for the pump you should hear a humming sound for a few seconds then stop if you dont hear it it could be your fuel pump could be bad check to make sure you have voltage to your fuel pump with a tester before going through changing out the pump. I hope this helps you let me know how this turns out.

if the car starts with starting fluid, its a fuel issue. the incoming air is regulated by the idle control valve when the throttle body is closed. other than that the only thing regulating the incoming air is the throttle body/gas pedal

Try taking off the air intake hose at the front of the throttle body, and spray some WD-40 inside the throttle body, while someone tries to start it with gas pedal slightly pushed down. If it fires up & runs temporarily, you've got a fuel delivery problem.
