I have a golf gt tdi 150 which has been chipped to 180 bhp. In the mornings, I start it and it cuts out after few seconds. I then try again and it struggles to start and blows white smoke out of exhaust....

Hi Sue, White smoke is a sign of air in the diesel system. It seems as if the fuel line is sucking in air. The most likely place is the fuel filter seal. The best way of sorting out the problem is to replace the filter with a good quality replacement fuel filter. Regards John

The glow plug light in VW cars are telling you you have a fault not with the glow plugs but with the engine management.Get a garage to do a diagnostic check for you.

Glow plug light coming on at low speed not long after start

their is a unit that times the amount of time the heater plugs are energised ,its a complete unit so its not cheap but its easy to change ,its all transistorised so you have a warning light fault ,most likely not worthwhile to bother repairing it just ignore it till it packs up completly .And as for callng the AA ,well you might as well pray to odin or allah and get a better answer .The AA is only any good to tow you home ,other than that??¿' all the best mechanics work for commercial fleet companys and whats left work for the council /co op/ dealers then the left overs who cant get a job end up you know where .the best mechanics get out and open a spares shop,MOT station or train for other things in the uk because of the social stigma of the fact that you work with your hands and end up covered in black grime (phrase grease monkey)

Golf gt tdi 2.0 140 bhp mk 5 - esp light

When there's something wrong with the brake pressure that handbrake warning light comes on.

The ESP warning light could be caused by a lot of things, but most likely it's a dirty fuel filter. Don't take my word for it though, just go to the VW dealer and have it read the faultcodes from the ECU, which should point you/them in the right direction.

Alternatively, when you have the right equipment (= VAGCOM + cable) and knowledge, you or a friend yould diagnose the ECU yourself.

From the sounds of it, you'll need a small service (air filter and oil filter change, etc.) anyways. Don't forget to reset the ECU (or dis- and reconnect the battery) afterwards to erase the faultcode from memory (when there's still something wrong, it'll return soon enough).

You might get lucky with a small service :)
