Spray some starting fluid into the air cleaner if it starts then dies it is a fuel delivery issue ( bad fuel pump or the inertia switch has been tripped and must be reset) if it doesn't start it may be a crank sensor gone bad.
Testimonial: "What else could it be. I sprayed the starter fluid into the air intake and it started for a couple of seconds. Could it be a clogged fuel filter?"
SOURCE: car not starting, oil in
If you smell fuel in the exhaust the vehicle is flooding or there is no spark. If it is a carb engine, make sure that the choke is in and hold you foot flat on the pedal while trying to start, this will clear any flooding.
