2004 honda civic...heater not working property and also leaking green stuff (probably antifreeze)....inside window steams up as well.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Is the antifreeze leaking inside the passenger's compartment? If so, that would be your heater core (the small radiator like device that hot water from the engine flows through so that the fan can blow over it to deliver hot air to the inside of the car) leaking. There should be a hose going to the core and one coming from it back to the engine. If one of those is leaking (the antifreeze) they can be replaced. The fact that your windows are steaming up would seem to indicate that the leak is such that the fan blows moisture rather than heat into the car.

Car overheats, losing antifreeze...the overflow coolant reservoir leaks out onto the ground when I try to put antifreeze in there - so could this cause my car to overheat? I have had the antifreeze drained...

Hello, if your car has a blown head gasket and exhaust is entering the coolant system, it will continue to run hot until it is repaired. Using pure antifreeze will make it worse. It should be at least 1/2 water. If the coolant reservoir didn't leak you could probably drive a few more miles, but not many, before it overheats again. All that is doing is giving you a little more capacity. If you continue to run the engine hot you are going to do more serious damage to it.
I suggest you have the head gasket replaced. That stuff you put in there seldom works, and if it does work, it's only temporary.

I hope this helps.

I have a 2000 chevy blazer 4.3 auto my windsheld builds up with steam i change the thermostat thinking it was that but still steaming up the windows

Hi, if it is steaming up the inside of your windows, you have a water leak in your heater core. It is located on the passenger side enclosed. Check you water level also. You can try adding some engine stop leak, a good brand is Bar's leak that will seal any small leak which is what you probably have. Make sure you are running a 50?50 mixture of antifreeze. Good Luck, and please let me know.

What color antifreeze would i use for a 1997 honda civic?

Use green antifreeze that mixes with any type of antifreeze. A 50/50 mixture of antifreeze to water should work.

I wouldn't use other colors unless they say they mix with all antifreeze mixtures.

This has worked the best on my Hondas that I've owned over the years.

My widows fog up heavy on the inside when the defrost heats up

This is usually a good indication of a small leak in the heater core. Does it also smell really sweet?

My truck has a smell of antifreeze inside. The cooling fluid level has not dropped at all. Can't find any leaks on floor board and windows are not steaming up.any ideas

Even though you do not feel antifreeze on the rugs. The only way
the smell of Anti freeze can get in the cab is, It's leaking from the heater core.
Maybe not enough to see a leak on the floor.
However, the heater core is inclosed, plus antifreeze will not
dry. it can sit at the bottom of the heater box, for a long time.
And the smell can stay in there for a long, long time.

Once vehicle is up to operating temp., antifreeze can be smeeled inside and outside the car. The water level got low. No fluid inside on the floor, but smells horrible if temp is raised above 68 degrees....

Check all heater and rad hoses and connections. If you don't see anything steaming when the car is hot, it could be just you heater core leaking. Probably not a serious leak, just a slow one, or even just steam. Also check frost plugs and gaskets. If you see any wet on your engine, that will be your problem. Pay close attention to intake gaskets. GM has had a lot of problems with them in those years. Park over a clean piece of plywood or cardboard at night, and see if there is any antifreeze on it in the morning. If you absolutely can't find anything, maybe try some stop leak of some kind in it. I have the best luck with the stuff that is just powdered aluminum filings. There are lots of different brands. Your local parts store will have it.
