I have a 1983 Jeep CJ5 with a 258 in-line 6 and am trying to get it through California Smog check. I just put a rebuilt carb on, oxygen sensor, plugs, cap, rotor plugs and wires and replaced all of the vacuum lines. It is running way to rich to get past smog check. Got any ideas?

How high is the Hydrocarbon (HC)?

Got

new air filter?

Clean carbon off the EGR passage tube and back side of EGR valve.
This will lower the Nox

Clean/ change PCV.

Ran a tank of gas with Lucas fuel system cleaner.

Do a heavier grade oil change right before the test.
Example: if you use 10W30 then use 10W40.


Keep the engine HOT right before the you pull into the smog machine.

The jets on the carb may need to be tuned,also check the metering rods,you might be getting to much fuel not enough air,

It won't pass smog in California because the 1st thing a smog tech does it check for fault codes on the vehicle's computer with a scanner.

Does you engine sound like it has an exhaust leak under the hood? 89 4.0 litres were NOTORIOUS for the exh manifold cracking between #5 and # 6 cylinders. If this is the case, the O2 sensor is not seeing the proper amount of exhaust, and it will send the fuel injectors a richer condition than needed.

97 jeep grand Cherokee. 133k miles. Trying 2 pass a California smog test. New catalytic converter installed. Drove 150 miles. Says converter hasn't registered required info yet to pass smog. Ideas?

You put something back the wrong way.....any amount of water in the tank, carb or whatever WILL NOT cause the engine not to fire.....check any wiring/rewiring you did for accuracy

It depends which emission you are failing on but I suspect that it is either CO or NOx. If it is NOx, then it is quite possible that you have a problem with your EGR valve or the ignition timing is incorrect. If you failed CO, you may have a dirty air filter or indeed, a bad carb, but I would need to know the actual gas and readings to be certain.

what you could start with is checking to see what trouble codes are being logged for this vehicle...if the engine light stays on, it means the ecu is registering a fault......by the means of a trouble code...now the trouble code doesnt tell you how to fix it, but it does give you the direction to go down...judst wondering if you have tried to obtain the trouble codes

My 83 cutlass supreme check engine light on
It means the car is running too rich. Check the air filter. If it clean you will likely need to rebuild the carb if it hasn't been done. If it has you might just need a carb adjustment.
