Some times the speed omeder sticks?

Some times the speedometer sticks, usually after driving for a while. Often after setting overnight it dropps back to zero but not always.?

  • wendankei Dec 06, 2009

Oops, Yes, I can spell speedometer (sometimes)

I think the problem in in the cluster itself. When you turn off the truck the speedometer gets stuck at the most recent speed usually over 40. When you start to travel again, it adds the your current speed to the speed that the speedometer stopped at. So if it stopped at 40 and you were on a 70 mph freeway it would show 110 mph.
No, the check engine light does not come on and the rest fo the guages seem to be working fine.

Sticking speedometer

Lubricating the inner speedometer cable located on the tail-shaft of the transmission will most likely cure the erratic speedometer. Unscrew the flexible outer cable and remove the inner cable. Clean the removed inner cable. As you slowly insert it back into the outer cable apply a generous amount of general automotive grease to the cleaned inner cable.

1998 frontier pickup, no tach. Speedometer goes to 41 mph with vehicle in motion and sticks there.

Remove the speedo feed wires on the sensor on the output drive haft and with with vehicle up on stands run angine and check the voltage ,if the voltage will not change with speed the renew it not expensive if the voltage is varable over the speed range then remove the dash unit its all in one and get it repaired around the 200euro mark for a repair

Speedo starts off fine for a couple of miles and then moves round the clock to max speed slowly. Next time out same beginning but it sticks at 65! Any idea? Chris

Thsi is likely a problem inside the speedometer guage internally with the driven gears. They use drive motors to drive the needles inside. If it is pretty continuous then the speedometer is in trouble and will require a speedometer specialist to rebuild the unit or replacement of the unit.

Speedometer goes to 0 while driving and the air

on rare ocasions the speedometer gauge cluster goes bad, but usually its the speed sensor. either the sensor it self or the connection either on the speed sensor or at the ecu. sometimes oil gets in and interupts in the electical connections. also make sure everything is fine in the fuse area.

Speed omeder

Sounds like your speedometer cable is binding inside its sleeve. If you can get it loose from the rear of the instrument cluster in the dash (typically just pull the entire instrument cluster assembly out the front after taking out a couple or three screws) just shoot some dry graphite powder into it (available at Ace or Home Depot). Don't use oil or WD-40, as that will probably make it worse. It's doubtful that it's the transmission itself, the speedo is a simple thing driven by a cable from the transmission to the dash.

Speedometer sticks

There is a way, have a friend drive at 30 mph and raise there hand at that speed, you follow them and make a note of the RPM, from there is is simple math to figure out the other speeds and RPM reading.
