Do you have to remove the timing belt to replace the water pump on a 1999 mercury mystique gs 2.0L

  • 1 Open the hood and disconnect the negative cable terminal from the battery using a wrench. This is the cable connected to the post with the negative sign next to it.
  • 2 Place a large drain pan under the radiator, open the radiator drain valve and loosen the radiator cap. Allow all the coolant to drain from the radiator and then close the radiator valve. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle and cover it if you plan to reuse it later.
  • 3 Unfasten the two bolts from the top engine cover, which shields the water pump pulley. Use a ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket. When removing the cover detach the crankcase ventilation tube from the edge of the cover by hand.
  • 4 Raise the front of your car with a floor jack, support it with two jack stands and chock the rear wheels with a couple of wooden blocks.
  • 5 Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise using a breaker bar with a 3/8-inch driver. Insert the breaker bar driver in the square hole of the belt tensioner. Hold the belt tensioner in the release position and lift the drive belt from the pulleys. Slowly release the belt tensioner to its original position.
  • 6 Loosen the clamps holding the two hoses to the water pump using a Phillips-head screwdriver and detach the hoses from the water pump.
  • 7 Unfasten the three bolts that hold the water pump and housing assembly to the engine using a ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket. Remove the water pump from the engine.
  • 8 Unfasten the water pump body from the water pump housing bolts using the ratchet and socket.
  • Installing the water pump. 9 Remove old gasket traces from the mating surface of the water pump housing using a plastic scraper. Install a new water pump gasket following the instructions of the new pump manufacturer.
  • 10P osition the new water pump in place over the housing and install the mounting bolts by hand. Tighten the bolts to 18 foot-pounds using a torque wrench and a socket.
  • 11 Place the water pump assembly in position on the engine of your Mercury Mystique and install the new bolts (part number W701544) by hand. Tighten the bolts to 13 foot-pounds using the torque wrench, short ratchet extension and socket.
  • 12 Rotate the three water pump assembly bolts clockwise an additional 95 degrees using the socket, short ratchet extension and a degree wheel.
  • 13 Attach the two hoses to the water pump and tighten the hose clamps with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Reinstall the drive belt using the breaker bar.
  • 14 Lower your Mercury Mystique off the jack stands.
  • 15 Replace the top engine cover with the ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket. Refill the radiator with coolant and tighten the radiator cap.
  • 16 Connect the battery cable to the negative battery post using the wrench. Start the engine, check for coolant leaks around the water pump and add more coolant to the radiator, if necessary.

Broken water pump bolts

If you remove the water pump and the shank if the broken bolts are exposed, try removing them with a bolt extractor.you may have to heat it up with a small torch. A propane torch used to sweat plumbing fittings will work.If the bolts are broken off in the block you will have to center punch them and drill them out.

How do i take out the wter pump offf 2001 stratus? It seems like you have to practicly take the engine out of the car to take replace it

The water pumo is located behind the timing belt cover youll have to remove the timing belt to replace it. The 2.4 engine is similar to the 2.0 Neon motor. It wasn't a quick and easy job but doable if you have a puller for the crank pulley and patience.

You will be working under the right front wheel well a lot. And like mentioned above - get a repair manual. You'll need to re-tension the timing belt.

Remove radiator and fan and anything that will block you from getting to the water pump. I suggest take pictures of each step that you disconnected all parts getting to the water pump and the removal of the water pump with a digtal camera and take the pump to the parts dealer so that you get an exact match.

Next read the instructions that come with the pump. Clean all old gasket and glue off of the place where you will install the new water pump (take your last picture you take and reverse the order and reinstall the gasket/sealer and water pump and all other parts).

Use a tork wrench on the bolts, add water and anti-freeze to the radiator and start the car and look for leaks.

Hope this helps.

Installing water pump in 97 cavalier 2.2

Hi. Here's the proceudere on how to replace the water pump of your 97 Chevy Cavalier.

•1
Drain the cooling system. Place a large oil drain container under the drain fitting located on the bottom of the radiator. Turn the drain fitting counterclockwise until fluid is draining from the radiator. Use a pair of pliers to turn the drain fitting if you cannot turn it by hand. Turn the fitting clockwise to tighten it after all of the fluid has drained from the radiator.
•2
Remove the cooling fan. Disconnect the electrical connection from the fan motor. Remove the bolts holding the fan assembly to the radiator support with a ratchet wrench. Pull the fan assembly up from the engine compartment and remove it.
•3
Remove the serpentine belt. Place a wrench over the belt tensioner and rotate the tensioner to release the tension on the belt. Pull the belt off the pulleys and remove it from the vehicle.
•4
Remove the water pump pulley. Place a screwdriver behind the pulley to lock it in place while removing the pulley mounting bolts with a ratchet wrench.
•5
Disconnect the coolant hoses running to the water pump.
•6
Remove the water pump mounting bolts with a ratchet wrench or wrench and remove the water pump from the vehicle.
•7
Clean the mating surfaces of the engine block and new water pump with a towel saturated with lacquer thinner.
•8
Apply a thin layer of RTV sealer to both sides of the new water pump gasket and place the gasket on the new water pump.
•9
Place the water pump against the engine block and finger tighten the water pump mounting bolts to hold the pump in place. Tighten the bolts with a torque wrench to 18 foot-pounds.
•10
Place the pulley on the water pump and install the water pump pulley mounting bolts with a ratchet wrench.
•11
Attach any hoses previously disconnected from the water pump.
•12
Install the serpentine belt. Route the belt over the pulleys according to the routing diagram in the engine compartment. Place a wrench over the belt tensioner and rotate the tensioner to tighten the tension on the belt.
•13
Install the cooling fan. Gently lower the cooling fan in position and install the mounting bolts attaching the fan assembly to the radiator support with a ratchet wrench. Attach the electrical connection to the fan motor.
•14
Refill the cooling system to the appropriate level, start the vehicle and check for leaks around the water pump.

All the best!

How do i change a water pump in a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix

Hope the following will help.
1) Drain the radiator.
2) Loosen the 4 bolts on the water pump pulley. You will remove the pulley and install it on the new pump. Just loosen the bolts 1/4" turn with the belt still on, this will prevent the pulley from turning.
3) Remove serpentine belt.
4) Remove 4 bolts and the pulley and set aside.
5) Remove two power steering pump bolts (15mm). You must do this because one of the bolts for the water pump is behind the PS pulley, and you cant remove it without moving the PS pump out of the way. The bolts on the PS pump are in the 12 oclock and 6 oclock position. There is a large access hole in the PS pump pulley. Just line it up, slip in a long socket and remove them. Let the PS pump rest on the oil filter housing.
6) Remove water pump. There are 4 large bolts (15mm) and 4 small bolts (3/8") on the water pump. After the bolts are all out, I placed a length of pipe on the water pump and gave it a couple taps with a hammer and it popped right off.
7) Remove old gasket. The tool of choice IMO is a razor blade like youd use to remove a winshield inspection sticker. Be careful not to score the mating surface. Remove old gasket and dry off surface.
8) Seat the new gasket and water pump in place, install all the bolts.
9) Reinstall the PS pump and torque bolts.
10) Install pulley on water pump and torque.
11) Install serpentine belt.
12) Re-torque bolts on water pump pulley if needed.
