If the battery is less than 12 volts then the proper way to condem it is to first charge it up then test it. Sometimes other things can cause a battery to drain. But if you have 3 to 4 years on the battery and with this onset of cold temperatures, this is when batteries usually fail

Testimonial: "Thank you for responding... but now the problem got worse... I bought a new battery and when I went to put the cables on...the postive snapped wow huh"

If the key was left on when you hooked up the battery it will snap because components are on.

Also if the reason the battery was dead there might be a component that is stuck on even tho the key is off. Sometimes a bad computer will not shut down like its suppose to after a minute or two and overnight the battery will be dead.

If this was the case the new battery should be fine to hook up and then get tested

Hi Allyson

Have the battery charged, start the vehicle and check to see if the alternator is charging correctly, should be around 13 volts.

If the alternator is charging, it could be a accessory draining the battery down, like boot or interior light, radio ect, which you will need to trouble shoot.

Hope this helps, also did the vehicle sit around for a month or was it just flat one day.

Cheers.

Vehicle acts like dead battery but it is not.

It is a type of security system. Like you said all functions are turned off until you push button because battery is disconnected from system.

1998 Cadillac Deville. Fully charged battery but car is dead. I tried to start the car and it just clicked but it had some, but very little power. I placed the battery charger on the car and in 3 hours...

Hello,

I am thinking a couple of things here:
1. Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
Solution: hold the gas pedal to the floor and try to start the vehicle (if a clutch make sure the clutch is in). If the vehicle starts the TPS is bad or needs to be cleaned.
2. Try to Jump the battery
3. Very little power can be an intake manifold leak, water port area or reservoir cap. Compression.

Usually a TPS problem will not throw a code like other start up sensors.

I hope this helps.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

Battery has full charge but absolutely nothing happens when key turned on

THERE ARE 2 FUSEBOXES ONE UNDER THE HOOD , ONE INSIDE THE VEHICLE. CHECK ALL FUSES WITH A GOOD FUSE TESTER. THERE ARE TEST POINTS FACING OUT ON EACH FUSE. POWER ON ONE SIDE ONLY, BAD FUSE. POWER ON BOTH SIDES, GOOD FUSE. POWER ON NEITHER SIDE , MAY BE SPARE FUSE[S]. THERE COULD BE A PROBLEM WITH THE FACTORY SECURITY SYSTEM. NOT TOO LIKELY.

Absolutely i would put a voltage meter tester on the battery terminals with the vehicle running you should have a reading of 13.29 to 14.29 anything lower would indicate not charging efficiently

Battery keeps needing a jump

If it shows the charge fluctuating alot, it's most likely the battery.

1992ford ranger -alternator dont charge battery

If there is power to the big wire that is bolted on to the back of the alternator and no power out of the small wires that plug in to the alternator then it is possible you need to replace your alternator. start the vehicle and check to see if there is 14 volts at the battery while the vehicle is running if there is then the alternator is good if not replace your alternator and charge your battery with a charger to make sure you have a proper charge on the battery.
