With any four wheel drive you should always stop and back up ten feet when ever taking it out four wheel drive. This helps to unlock the gears so they can disengage and helps ensure that it isn't still in 4WD.

are you in four wheel low or four wheel hi. if you are in four lo, put vehicle in neutral before trying to shift out and be at a complete stop. if you were in four hi, put vehicle in reverse and keep backing up, usually 4wd while come out and go back into 2wd
please try to switch back to 2wd mode in neutral position. then move car for few hundred meters. if this wont help you need to check the linkage mechanism on np242 transfer case.
