The clock spring inside steering column ,under the steering wheel . Is the air bag light lit on the instrument cluster as well ? What make , model and year vehicle . How cars clock spring works
If the clock spring is defective it can affect the cruise control if the buttons are on the steering wheel. Usually the horn will also be affected as well and the airbag light on constantly
Your best bet is to check what is happening by looking at cruise control data in the PCM and BCM. You will need a high end scan tool to do this. It could be as simple as a bad switch in the steering wheel or a brake switch that is bad or out of adjustment..
The switch is shorted to ground. Verify with a multimeter. But before take your precautions with the air bag in the steering wheel. Desactivate it before.
Hello manderfield,The bulbs are replaceable but it requires complete disassembly of your cluster and above average soldering and de-soldering skills. The cluster removal process requires removing the trim molding that surrounds the cluster. There are several screws along the bottom and sides of the trim that you will need to remove before un-snapping the main section. You can lower the tilt steering wheel and place you transmission in low gear to help provide room for the trim and cluster removal. Thanks Mikewww.kincerservice.com
check brake switch under dash above the brake pedal. See if sensing wires are broken . or if it uses a duplicate switch sensor check it is engaging properly. Also check you tube on possible failures.
Also in the engine bay the cable from the accelerator petal will attach to the trottle on the engine. Check for another cable at this location from the cruise control and check the cable is not broken .
Check brake globes are functioning and are not blown as well.
It sounds like you have some bulbs burned out in the cluster and cruise switches. I don't think you can just replace the bulbs in the switch. You can replace bulbs in the instrument cluster.
Im pretty sure thats where the cruise / set would display at. i have a 03 aerio manual and mine has cruise control. right to the left middle of the rpm meter is the green box. when u turn on cruise control it says "cruise" then once u set ur speed , right under it says "set"
Does the on light in the dash come on? If not, you may have a broken switch in the steering wheel which is a fairly cheap repair. Otherwise, the controls work through the Printed Circuit Board in your dash (your instrument cluster) and the problem could be as simple as a solder defect or faulty component. The problem is that no Ford Service Technician that I know will touch this and tell you that you need to replace it.
The instrument cluster is very easy to replace but may cost you a few more dollars than you want to spend. I would have someone with an electrical background check the cruise control switches in your steering wheel with a multimeter before going any further with this. Also check the wiring for resistance leading from the switch to the cluster.
