all fuel injected engine rev to around to 2000 rpm on start up then as the ECM completes its checks brings the engine back to set idle
run the fault codes as what you report may be a problem idle speed sensor (ISS)
More likely the battery, try starting the car with no electrics running (interior light, fans, wipers etc.) when it fires rev it up a few times and let it idle for a bit before pulling away if it runs fine after this you can use you electrics as normal . if its an auto pull away slowly if its a manual pull away with more revs than normal but very slowly engage the clutch.

Ideal is about 6 to7 hunderd rpms for most chevy automatics .You need to say engine size and year when you ask questions like this.
My best guess is a problem with the catiylitc converter they tend to clog .Did you hear rattleing from it before this problem started .This is a sign there going .If exhuast gases can't get out the engine will run but have no power or rev up .
The good news is their not expensive 2 hunderd to 250 parts and gaskets not installed .
If the "engine light" turn on, scanned the computer car in order to know what fault code is stored there, then could start directly with this issue.
Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.
Hi This sounds like a cold start system fault, which is a number of things.
Cold start temperature sensor not operating correctly so the cold start system won't work when the engine is cold.
The idle needs to be set to the correct RPM of the engine when warm, if it is idling ok when it is warm then this wont be the problem.
Spark Plugs are worn and need replacing.
Most case's its the cold start system not operating correctly and if you have a good workshop to take it too they should pick this up quite quickly. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.
Check the fuel delivery, first. It could be fuel pump or an obstruction. The best way is to start the car in park, then run over to the engine compartment and rev up the throttle. Keep idle higher than normal. If it wants to die, rev throttle higher to compensate. If it makes no difference, verify fuel pressure when engine dies. Usually ignition related wont even allow the car to start. Any service engine indication?
check the distributor to make sure that the rotor is pointing at the no. 1 cylinder when that cylinder is at top dead center on the compression stroke. It sounds like your distributor rotor is 180 degrees out of time. The engine will run but will do what yours is doing.
