Pontiac Grand Am passlock security A year ago my car wouldn't start and the security light was on. We had it towed to the dealer 120 miles away. It cost me $700 to replace the ignition, on October 4, 2008. On October 12, 2009 it happened again. I had it towed again, and they said that they couldn't find any problems, but they shut off the security light. After a week, I had to go get my car from them, unfixed. A week later it happened again. My local mechanic gave me a print out on how to reset things. This works, but it is temporary. I really don't know what to do...or why my car has this "security" feature....I don't need it. Can anyone help? Hardwire maybe?

No, we have never even made a copy to this key....it is the original.

The dealer said they scanned everything and couldn't come up with anything.

I just realized....this post says 1999, and my car is a 2001...if that makes much of a difference.

Are you ever using a copied key? if you are, all hell can break loose with these systems. i dont know why, but some of these were more sensitive then others. only use your gm key. also, try having your car scanned for body control module codes, as the passlock system is built into it and there may be some underlying problems causing this.

Is the security light flashing? this happened to my mothers Grand Am 2004 in Jan 2010. WeTowed it to a dealer $500 later it was running. This week again same thing called tow truck the driver said he has seen this alot. he advised turn car to on for 15 to 30 min after security light stops flashing try and start car. It worked for my mothers car and saved us a tow and probably another $500.

My son has a 2003 malibu, with about 23,000 miles. Has had no problems until last friday (4 days ago) on a trip he stopped for gas, when he got back in wouldn't start, engine tries to turn but will not...

check that the theft system light is not flashing on you when trying to start it up. if it is, then it's not going to start since the car is in security mode. put the key in the ignition and turn it until the instrument panel lights light up and just leave it like that for 10 minutes until the theft system light goes off. turn the key back to off(don't take it out) and try to start it. it's a pain, espesially when you're in a hurry. to get it repaired at the dealer costs about $600-$800. I had mine done for $800.

Security system on motor lockout unable to start

1. Attempt to start the car, let it stall, but DO NOT turn the key off! Leave it in RUN.
2. Wait 10 minutes or until the Theft System light glows steady instead of blinking.
3. Do not turn the key off, but start it immediately.
4. This should reset your Passlock system.

Once done, the key is re-programmed and should allow the fuel injectors to work again. The car would start now if corrected.

In some cases, the VATS (GM'S VEHICLE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM) will re learn the code this way, and will then allow the restart, however if this does not work, then you can simply tow it to any GM vehicle dealer to have the service department re code it.

There is a permanent solution though.Adding the PLJX Self learning Bypass module (69.95) will bypass the PASSLOCK system in your vehicle for good. See this at www.PASSLOCK2.com

Good luck and hope you get your Camaro running 100% again soon, O had installed the Passlock bypass to my in-laws Gt Grand Am and so for worked like a charm.

How much is this costing,???? that you need to discuss with the shop repairing it for you. Be sure he knows what he is doing, it can get expensive if he's guessing.

2004 pontiac Grand Am with security passlock starting problems

Unfortunately you are correct, this
vehicle has the PASSLOCK II key
based engine disabling system, and currently it
is engaged. The sensor does not recognize &
retain the passlock reader chip in your ignition
switch any longer.

A bypass is required to circumvent.
If left unchecked, it will lock down the fuel injector
rail (as it has now), and you will need to
tow it in to GM for evaluation, and resetting.
Eventuall, the 10 minute over ride will cease to
work and you will finally be forced to visit
a Pontiac/GM dealer.

But, if you want to just remove this system
from the equation entirelly,
I suggest the PLJX bypass kit to get around
this issue.

This Passlock Bypass Module is designed to momentarilly
allow the engine to remote start by sending a proper
coded pulse to open the fuel rail passlock injector
cut off circuit.

The output from an alarm/remote starter
would then shut down the pulse, once it has detected
the engine has engaged, and preserve the integrity
of the passlock system.

That is it's designed purpose.

However, in your case, this input wire on the PLJX module,
instead of going to a momentary ground pulse from
an alarm/remote starter,
would go to a constant chassis ground, through
the bypass module, grounding out the PASSLOCK.
The PASSLOCK would then always be bypassed as long
as that wire is chassis grounded.

I can not speak about a damaged passlock system,
like if a thief has destroyed it, because I do not
get into this part of GM'S security application.
Coincidence to installing
after market remote starters, this does work on bypassing
passlock in most all GM vehicles,
including your year GM vehicle as well.

Also, this is a self learning, resistor sensing
and adjusting module. Once the VATS wires have been tapped,
you would press the program button to learn,
and it does. The car should then allow start
with any hardware store key.
