I have a 1997 monte carlo with a 3.1L engine. the transmission won't shift when it is cold but after the car warms up,it shifts ok. What might be wrong?

Sounds like your tranny fluid level is too low. Check tranny fluid level on dip stick when engine is warmed up and running.

It desperatly needs a filter and oil change. Chevy's are very dependant on correct oil (tranny) levels

Could be fluid/filter but also could be shift solenoid/governer.

Sounds like possibly more than on problem, crankshaft position sensor, or ignition module likely on starting prob which maybe affecting shifting due to hard code in ecm, or shift prob could be shift solenoid in valve body of transmission. Both parts readily available from local parts store

It dosn't sound like you have a major problem .I would take it to a transmission shop for service oil filters testing for codes its about 100 bucks .new transmissions are a lot more .

2002 Monte Carlo

Sounds like a transmission modulator. Its on the back of transmission with the vacuum line running to it.
Check to see if you have the vacuum undone or broke on intake or trans

You need to rebuild the transmission,it's over heating. May want to check your transmission cooler first .
