This model has a very large pulley base that is part of the shaft of the water pump. Here's a photo that shows the bolt locations:

This pulley has to be pressed off,and pressed back on.Some auto parts can do this for you.A good power steering pulley puller/install tool can do this.

As I remember these cars, the water pump pulley was held on with three 10 mm bolts. If this is not the case, post a response with the engine size and code (8th digit of the VIN) and I'll try to help you.

How do you remove the timing belt cover on a 1995 VW Golf.

What is needed Tools: 6mm and 8mm allen wrench socket, 5mm allen wrench. 8mm, 13mm, 19mm socket and ratchet. 10mm combination wrench. Long ratchet extensions (at least one 6in, more are helpful). 5inch Wheel puller (for main shaft pulley). (Some models may need a special spanner tool to adjust the timing belt tensioner) Parts: 2 gal of anti-freeze mixed with distilled water. All three V-belts. (Alt, A/C, P/S) $32.95 New water pump top. $91.91 New gasket for WP. $9.13 New timing belt. $26.13.

Procedure:

Remove battery cable (either power (+) or ground (-)) remove alternator remove A/C remove power steering pump .Remove water pump pulleys remove main shaft pulleys remove timing belt covers remove A/C mounting hardware remove timing belt (don't turn any of the wheels its connected to) replace timing belt adjust belt tension remove water pump face put on new gasket and new part.

Leave pulleys off. replace bottom timing belt cover, replace crank shaft pulley, replace steering pump, replace A/C, put small belt on A/C (hang loose) put large belt around A/C, Main and water pump pulley. put middle size belt on Main water pump and power steering pump reattach bolts for the steering pump pulleys put alternator back on adjust all belts. connect battery

Problem areas:
Main pulley: There are 4 6mm hex head bolts. These must be removed. The main 19mm hex head can be used to turn the engine it the timing belt slips and you have to readjust the timing.

Putting on new belts: This can be a real pain if you get VW belts. The adjustments won't give enough to put the belts over the edge so the easy way is to remove the pulley on the water pump. Then its real easy.

Timing: If you turn the wheels that the timing belt goes on you will have to reset the timing. Mark the timing points with something like whiteout so its easy to see. The timing mark on the toothed gears are small dots. The timing mark for the crankshaft is a small cut on the outer pulley. When its aligned with the intermediate wheel timing mark (there is an arrow on the cover as a hint) should intersect as viewed from the right wheel well. The camshaft timing mark should line up with the top of the engine near the front.

Power steering pump: It is held on with lots of bolts. One is in a channel that is hard to see but can be found with a 6" extension. If you look at the pump you will see three bolts that go into the housing. This should give you an idea where the forth is.

Replace water pump v6

1. Drain the coolant.
2. Loosen, (don't remove yet) the 4 bolts that hold the water pump pulley.
3. Remove the drivebelt. In order to remove the belt you need to put a wrench on the tensioner pulley to decrease the tension on the belt.
4. Now remove the 4 bolts loosened in step 2.
5. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the water pump and disconnect the bypass hose from the top of the water pump.
6. Remove the drivebelt tensioner by removing the bolt in the center of it.
7. Remove the water pump bolts. There are 6mm and 8mm bolts, a total of 12 bolts. They are not all the same length. Be careful to note which bolts go in which holes.
8. After all bolts are removed sometimes the pump will require a little whack with a rubber mallet to unseat the gasket. Never pry between the pump and engine block.
9. Before installing the new pump, clean all the old gasket material from the engine block.
10. Use RTV sealant on both sides of the gasket for the new pump.
And............ the rest is just reversing the above except that you can fully tighten the pump pulley before putting the belt back on.
I hope this is helpful.

Next take serpentine belt. Take the 4 bolts off holding on the water pump pulley and remove pulley. Next remove the 5 bolts holding water pump in. Clean water pump housing of old gasket and clean with alcohol or paint thinner to remove any residue. Need diagram to replace water pump

1) Drain the radiator. 2) Loosen the 4 bolts on the water pump pulley. You will remove the pulley and install it on the new pump. Just loosen the bolts 1/4" turn with the belt still on, this will prevent the pulley from turning. 3) Remove serpentine belt. 4) Remove 4 bolts and the pulley and set aside. 5) Remove two power steering pump bolts (15mm). You must do this because one of the bolts for the water pump is behind the PS pulley, and you cant remove it without moving the PS pump out of the way. The bolts on the PS pump are in the 12 oclock and 6 oclock position. There is a large access hole in the PS pump pulley. Just line it up, slip in a long socket and remove them. Let the PS pump rest on the oil filter housing. 6) Remove water pump. There are 4 large bolts (15mm) and 4 small bolts (3/8") on the water pump. After the bolts are all out, I placed a length of pipe on the water pump and gave it a couple taps with a hammer and it popped right off. 7) Remove old gasket. The tool of choice IMO is a razor blade like youd use to remove a windshield inspection sticker. Be careful not to score the mating surface. Remove old gasket and dry off surface. 8) Seat the new gasket and water pump in place, install all the bolts. 9) Reinstall the PS pump and torque bolts. 10) Install pulley on water pump and torque. 11) Install serpentine belt. 12) Re-torque bolts on water pump pulley if needed

How do you get to the water pump in a 1999 chevy cavalier

Make sure you don't have delco loc 2 or theftloc audio system before disconnecting the battery. You should be able to do this by contacting your local dealer and they run the vin and tell you.

Before you put in the new pump you need to put grease on the splines.

battery disconnected

drain coolant

take out the electric fan

take off the serpintine belt

use a large screwdrive or equivlent to hold the pump pulley and loosen all of the bolts holding the pulley on the pump.

After all are loosened then remove from the pulley and remove the pulley.

Take out the four bolts holding the pump to the engine block.

get a wood dowl or equilent and a hammer and give the old pump a few taps to break away the old seal.

Once the seals broke loose take the old pump out.

then clean up the block,

clean everything with brake parts cleaner

put RTV sealant on both sides of the new gasket and put it on the new pump.

try not to let the gasket move around so the bead isnt messed up to bad.

put the pump in and put all four bolts in finger tight

Torque on pump mounting bolts is 18 ft/lbs

Torque on pulley bolts is 18 ft/ lbs

then the rest is just reverse of removal

1998 Ford Escort ZX2 Water Pump Housing removal

I am sure the leak is the water pump based on years of Escort work, The ZX2 is equipped with a 2.0L DOHC V-Tech engine. The water pump is on the front (rt side of car) of the engine block, visible with the hood up. NAPA autoparts replacement instructions are to loosen the belt drive pulley from the pump BEFORE removing the serpentine belt. Once the four bolts are loose, take the belt off (good time to replace?) remove bolts and old water pump (four more bolts)- it will be tight, but it comes out- clean gasket area and install new gasket and pump in reverse order. That includes putting the pulley on and hand tightening the bolts, put on the belt, finish tightening the bolts to the pulley.
