Remove valve cover and to see if it look oily if it does more then likely that's not the noise. I would remove the upper timing belt cover and check the timing belt idler pulley bearing.

Engine makes loud knocking noise that seems to be coming from the very top of the engine. I should note that this car has 175000 miles on it

Knocking noises from the overhead cam may be making the noise in question. Maybe a bad bearing on the camshaft or a spun cam.

175,000 mi. is a lot of miles for an engine, it may have been over revved at some point, or suffered from oil starvation or dirty oil with a prior owner.

Why is my 1997 Ford Escort steering wheel making a grinding noise when it is turned (it is not power asisted steering)?

There are two bearings in the steering column. One or both may be bad. The most likely problem would be the lower bearing. While someone is turning the steering wheel look under the hood at the bottom of the steering column and see if it is rotating smoothly or kind of jumpy. You might have to place your hand on it to feel if it is smooth or jumpy (make sure the engine is off and the exhaust is not hot).

Clicking noise on my 06 GTI!

You can be sure you have engine damage now. There is not just one thing to check. It needs to go to the shop ASAP before you drive it anymore.

Possible damages

Cam bearings
Main bearings
Rod bearings
Cracked rod and main caps
Bent rods
Damaged Piston and wrist pins
Damaged cam
Broke springs
Bent valves
Damged crank
The list can go on. So that is be best advice to give.
