On my 2004 F150 4x4 when I shift into 4wd or into 1st or 2nd the engine seems to be slower or build RPMs slower. Is this normal?
Mcdevito75 here, I would figure yes, if your shifting while in motion, definetly yes, when you shift your changeing gear ratios in the 4 wheel drive or the transmission, this will cause the engine to slow but also make the gas pedal moe responsive. If you feel or hear this slowing down of the engine while standing still (at a red light) it"s most likely the computer contolled sensor in the tranny. I woulkd still check with my local shop for their advice too.

It does it in 4wd (hi or lo) and in 1st or 2nd in 2wd mode. Have had the truck for a year and it had done this the whole time. Was not sure if it was a feature on the truck to limit RPMs as it builds RPMs much slower than it does in drive (2wd or 4wd) mode.
It does this in 4wd (both hi and lo) and in 2wd mode as well if i put the selector in 1st or 2nd. Have had the truck for 1 year and it has done this the whole time. Was not sure if this was a feature to limit the RPMs while in 4wd or 1st or 2nd. It builds RPMs quicker in drive and I am able to run higher RPMs. On cars or trucks I have had in the past when in 1st or 2nd I have been able to run higher RPMs before shifting (moving through gears manually with the automatic).
there is no noise at all.
4wd is working, there is no noise that is out of the ordinary. The performance is less harder to make RPMs (like the engine is under a load) when in 4WD or when in 1st or 2nd gear (even when in 2wd)
Thanks much, this is the first car or truck I have had in 25 yrs where if you shift through the gears the performance is worse (inability to hotrod for lack of a better term)
I'm going to leave this as comment only, so it still shows up as unanswered. Sounds like it could be normal operation, but I cannot be 100% sure. operationally it sounds correct to me.
Do you hear a grinding noise in 2WD ? Not sure if what you are feeling is normal, or if the front hubs are not locking in ( IWE problem) and you are feeling a dead front end turning. When you lock into 4WD, are the front wheels locked in, and park of the drive train ? ( i.e. is 4WD really working ) ?
Is this in 4Hi or 4Lo ?
