Check for a wet ecu

the ecu compartment is under the windshield on the passenger side on E36

you gain acess to it under the hood....
this compartment gets wet, the ecu lays on a flat surface in that
compartment.

the bottom side of the circuit board gets wet and starts corrosion.

remove the ecu, take the bottom plate off, clean the bottom of the circuit
board with alcohol and a soft tooth brush.

you should be able to see the signs of corrosion or conductive build up.

this gunk bridges solder points doing all sort s of wierd things to your
car, including false sensor readings from asc/abs controllers and other
sensors....

all the way to engine failure and worst case burnt and shorted wiring
harness.

I'm on my 3rd ecu, took me and the repair boys a few years to figure this
one out.

BTW: i would get that ecu mounted above that flat surface, use some sort
of standoff to raise it so that it is not laying in the wet.

Engine light on all the time. Once it said gas cap. And not again.

Many arts stores will check your codes for free in the event you don’t own a code reader. Knowing your car model might help.

Check engine light is on. How u fix it?

first you have to see what code is in the computer to know what direction to start to find the problem. once this is done then you can start to check the problem system and test to find what caused it and then fix it.

How do I turn off the check engine light?

If you have an Autozone parts store in your area, they will plug a code reader into the car for free and tell you what is causing the light to be on. Fix the problem, the light will go off. (If you don't have Autozone, check with other parts suppliers to see if they offer the free check.)

Will an obd II reader come out with codes for problems even if the check engine light isn't on?

I think you have a defective fuel pump pressure check valve here. If you don't have a check engine light on you will not have any codes.

My check engine light is on and I want to know how to reset it. in my mazda protege 2003

you cant really reset it unless you clear the codes with a scan tool, or code reader, but resetting it isn't going to do any good unless you fix the problem that turns it on.

I am having trouble locating the vacuum hose, and the check engine light goes on and off every other couple of days. Plus I noticed the rpm guage keeps going up and down while at a light

Next time that light comes on, check the code that's popping up. The light is indicating a code, which in turn directs you in the direction of the problem. If you don't have code reader, bring your vehicle to a place like autozone that will check the code for free. Let me know what the code is. Without this, we're just shooting in the dark, with the many different problems that would cause this.

I was code chasing for a long time with mine, (light was intermitent) until I finally bought a code reader myself. Light popped on, I plugged it in and grabbed the code instantly.

My check engine light is on and i just got a code key and don't know how to use it. I know where to put, but how/where do i get the codes?

I don't really understand what your asking, but let me see if I can help. You bought a code reader and are not sure how to use it? the OBD II connector is a lot of times under the dash on the drivers side. Most code readers require you to turn the key to "run" but not start the engine. the reader will then communicate with the car computer and display the stored code(s). they should display as a Pxxxx with the x's being a number. For example P0310. Depending on the make of scanner it will tell you the definition of the code. If not then just enter the code in your favorite search engine on line and you will get it.

2002 Dodge Intrepid engine light on

Trans axle module controls slip between wheels.
Finding a good shop is one of the hardest parts of owning a car.
Hint if the mechanic refers to his computer as a "code reader" be suspisious.
A code reader is exactly that -- it just reads codes
A scanner can run system tests, read codes, and comunicate with cars PCM. A code reader is CHEAP my scanner was $1200 and that was a steal.
Never hesitate to get other estimates. Many shops will waive the scanning charge if you get the work done there.
