I have a rochester quadrajet carburetor on an 84 monte carlo ss. My car won't stay running, and if I push the gas pedal it revs a little then just dies. If I keep pumping it I can keep it running.
If I understand correctly the car will idle but will not drive unless you pump the gas. If that's the case then you need to have it overhauled. There are blocked lines inside that are preventing it from working properly. Hope this helps.

If I'm not mistaken there is a fuel filter in the q-jet carburetor at the line entering the carb. 5\8 size on line and 1" on carb, filter is inside behind large nut.careful there is a spring and possibly a gasket inside.
There are all kinds of adjustments on that vehicle. Also, it depends on which carburetor it is equipped with. That vehicle came with a Rochester 2-barrel carb, a Rochester Quadrajet carb, or a Holley 4- barrel carb. There is not enough time or space to post all of the information about this here. I would recommend going to alldatadiy.com and subscribing to the service information for your vehicle for a small annual fee, or purchacing a manual like Chilton or Haynes.
If you are driving the car and it wont start after driving awhile. Do a wiggle on the CKP (crank position sensor) this sensor is located at the front main engine pulley, I am seeing a lot of loose male to female connection shut car off.
it is in the housing where the fuel line enters the carb. unscrew and remove the input fuel line, then unscrew and remove the housing. take note of the direction of the paper filter you remove. here's a page with more info on that car. http://www.carburetor.ca/carbs/tech/Rochester/Quadrajet-index.html
Check with some of your local shops that rebuild carbs, they can probably set you up with one. A new one will have to come from GM likely. You have the best idea in going to a junkyard and cannabilizing, I think. Hope this helps.
You should be able to find or order a Haynes manual, part # 10230, for Rochester carbs at you local auto parts store. If not then faxonautoliterature has the GM service manual for your car and it will have a section on rebuilding carbs. Hope this helps.
