Coolant leaking underneath engine. Can't really tell where it's coming from.I suspect it's a water pump leak. Is this a problem on the 2006 impala with only 50,000 miles. What is the estimate to repair.

AFTER I DRIVE IT I HAVE NOT NOTICED THAT IT IS STILL LEAKING AND THE TEMP IS NOT GOING UP WHILE I DRIVE THE TRUCK. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE WRONG?

I have a 2000 chrystler cirrious lxi it keeps leaking antifreez on btm left side if engine under belts cant tell why or where

You will need to get the car up on a hoist/lift to have it inspected from the underside where the leak will be easier to identify.

I suspect the leak is coming from the water pump seal which has deteriorated with use and age and coolant is seeping out. This is not at all uncommon on older installed pumps. When the engine is running the coolant is pressurised so it will escape faster if there is a leak. The water pump sits on the engine and has a pulley on the end of it. It is driven, together with other components, by the serpentine belt that runs off the engine crankshaft pulley.

If a failed WP seal is the source of the leak you would replace the entire water pump and seal with a new items unless the pump has been replaced in the past few years or so and has seen few miles. Pumps need to be replaced periodically in the life of an engine and you have to remove the pump to replace the seal so you would install a new pump at the same time.

Have the leak issue professionally checked out.

In the mean time keep the coolant level topped up to full when the engine has cooled and have it on hand to top up when needed. So check frequently. Make sure the correct coolant is used as you cannot mix coolant types. If you let the coolant run low your engine will overheat and that WILL usually cause expensive engine damage.

Antifreeze leaking over by harmanik balance

Hi Sarah,

I assume that you meant to say "harmonic balancer".
The first thing you need to keep in mind when it comes to fluid leaks is that they ALWAYS run downhill. The leak could be originating from several different places depending on WHICH ENGINE your Impala is equipped with. (This is really need-to-know information if you would like help with with your car - especially when we are talking about an engine problem.)
Anyway, It could be coming from the water pump or the intake manifold. If your car is equipped with a 3.8L engine, it is common for the plastic water pump by-pass tube to crack. I have also seen the timing covers leaking on the front of some of the GM V-6 engines. Then again, it could be something much more expensive to fix like a leaking head gasket. What you need to do is to follow the trail of antifreeze UP from where it is dripping/leaking under the car to find the source. The harmonic balancer is pretty much the lowest point on the front of your engine. ALL of the engine coolant (antifreeze) is in the UPPER half of the engine.

I have a leak that is coming out of the bottom of the engine under the crank shaft pulley....the engine is sideway mounted. I thought it had to be oil since I see it coming out from underneath the crank...

Please do try this steps:

  • Please do check the hose is connected properly and its not loose.
  • Also make sure that there is no leak and if the hose are old replace it with the new one.
Please check it first to avoid a lot cost of money. If you have additional questions feel free to reply to this solution. Have a nice day.

I top off my 1998 Nissan Altime's engine coolant evreyday. Also, the radiator fan stays on for appromiately 2 minutes after I shut the engine off. Is something wrong with the cooling system or the...

The fan running is normal. you need to find where the coolant is leaking. If there are no visable leaks. then suspect the radiator/reservoir cap.

Leaks coolant were could it come from

If you don't know where it is coming from, you have to find that out. Check the location of the spot on the floor, if you don't have a floor, put down a piece of cardboard, locate the drip, then look under the hood for what it is that is leaking. It could be the overflow on the expansion tank, could be your AC condensate line dripping, could be one of those tiny coolant lines that return to the back of the engine, could be the water pump, could be a hole in a hose. I don't know why the pressure check didn't show anything, might be something else. Check it out.

Coolant leak

leaks in this vicinity are usually from the seals going bad on the water pump. It's next to the PS pump, and is very common to leak there in any vehicle. Look at the pulley for the water pump, do you see streaks on it leading out from the center? This will confirm it. Recommendation: replace your water pump.

My 2006 charger 3.5 is leaking coolant but only somtimes is it a sign of water pump malfunction no indications on the gauges but car seems to be running hot

this is most likely the water pump if it is leaking at front of engine, the water pump is under the large timing belt cover and driven by the timing belt, so both are changed at the same time.

I have coolant leaking from underneath my 1998 Chevrolet Lumina

Water pump is located in the center of the left side. If you remove the plate you mentioned, you can probably see it. It is probably the source of the leak. The seals are prone to go bad in them.
