Question about 1991 Honda Accord

2 Answers

I have a "91 Accord" and the car will not idle, when stopping, sometimes. The engine stops, unless I increase the rpm's. Also, while driving the car, the engine jerks periodically, while driving. I replaced the plugs and wires, but the problem is still an issue?

If it is the injection and not a carb model then it sounds like you idle valve is siezed.

This is common on the older hondas, the idle goes up and down, this is caused by a couple of things, you may have low coolant or a bad idle air control valve, the last thing it may be is the power steering preasure switch, this switch is the most common, when you turn the wheel the switch is actived to raise the idle . sometimes that switch shorts out and cause the problem you are having, this switch is located on the powersteering hose, unplug the connector and if the idle stops going crazy then thats the problem.

Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Idling

The mechanic should check the Idle .If the Idle is stock then repair then or adjust the Idle .When It does not Idle, It means that the Idle is been stuck or its been tight or the Idle screw or bolt is been tight that causes the Idle not to move .You should loosen the Idle a little until you could arrange the Idle until it will Idle normally .When its not Idle when selecting gear. You should adjust the Idle until the car engine will not stop. and that the car can run while selecting gear.

I just bought a 91 honda accord se and when you go to stop it stalls or suts off. any ideas of what may be causing this

Check your 91 Accord's ignition coil. The coil goes bad at apprx. 150k miles and cause the car to run rough, hard to start(long cranking time) in the morning, stall after the vehicle has warmed up, cut out while driving and backfire horribly when accelerating from a standstill.

'91 Honda Accord LX transmission light on.

You say "standard transmission?" Do you mean "standard" as in "manual/5 spd./'stick-shift'?" transmission?

Either way, if you replaced the alternator belt and the battery light went away and the car doesn't sputter or stop, then it's the "speed sensor" on the transmission itself. The car will still drive, but the speedometer cannot read how fast the car is going (in RPM's as well).

Rough idle stalls at low rpm's

hello first check your idle with the car running foot on brake see were your rpm reading is if your below 500rpm check your label underhood for your curb idle setting second see if theres a adjustment screw you can increase were your gas cable lever rest against your set screw underhood if you feel confident enough remove your iac motor idle air control valve if the bore were the end of the pintle extracts out to close has varnish builup our carbon it will stick creating vacuum leak type senario causing stalling rough idle sometimes even no start conditions good luck
