Question about 2004 Pontiac Sunfire

2 Answers

My 2004 Pontiac Sunfire's Trac Off light came on this morning and stayed on, now car won't start...will idle for a second then die. Won't accelerate at all. Seems like no gas is getting through.at all. A mechanic over the phone said sounded like bad fuel pump, but why would Trac Off light come on just before problems started? Is this something else other than fuel pump?

The mechanic is probably right...sounds like the car is not getting fuel. Could also be a clogged fuel filter.

As to the Track Off indication, consult your owners manual...but what you're describing, definitely sounds like one of the above - clogged filter/fuel pump.

Have you ever ran the vehicle out of gas? That's the fastest way to pick up junk in the bottom of the fuel tank...which will clog a fuel filter in a hurry.

Good Luck,
Mike...

Check the fuel pump by listening to a whirrring noise as soon as you turn the key to on. You should hear a noise everytime. if not then the fuel pump is going out. Try it several times. Also check for vacuum leaks and the EGR valve. The Trac Off light comes on when something goes wrong with the Traction Trac Off means the traction is automatically turned off. Anything regarding traction like a bad wheel bearing, steering problem , etc. or even if the plug gets wet the trac off light will come on. The ABS system shuts off when this light is on. Trans Am are very notorius for this problem. And the bad thing is that you take them to a mechanic and they can't solve the problem very easy. it will work for a while then the lights come back on. Sorry, but thats how it is.

1998 pontiac sunfire manual. Car starts but sputters and then dies and is completly dead but in the morning will start again and then die. I changed the coil pack but still the same. what can it be?

You can't do any testing, until you have a battery
that will take and hold a charge

Then you move on to testing the Alternator, then
Fuel Pressure & continue on with other testing

Car won't start, battery is good, won't even turn over.

These vehicles are prone to failures in the antitheft system. This will actually lock out the starter and/or injectors. Read thru this link, might be your problem.

I have a 2004 pontiac sunfire with a few problems. First, when I turn the ignition to start the car all I get is a fast-paced clicking sound from the dash area and the engine doesnt even turn over. This...

as fo the idle, there is a IAC ( idle air control to maintain idle. you may have to remove this and clean the carbon out of it, and the intake as well. as for the clicking there are 3 solutions to fix it. battery if it is ok, the solinoid is bad on starter or the starter itself. but it does sound like a bad starter solinoid, because a bad battery will make the same clicking from solinoid. but make sure battery is ok first. when engine is off voltage at battery should be at least 12.6 or better. when running and alternator is ok, it should read about 14.2 to 14.7 if lower then 14 volts alt. is bad. have a very good day !! hope this helps!
