Question about 1996 Oldsmobile 88

Have 1996 olds 88, it cranks but won't start and seems to backfire. could this be a timing chain? The car has 82000 miles

Taking off the rocker cover over number1 cylinder, rotate the harmonic balancer to top dead centre, both inlet and exhaust rockers should be level and under no pressure, if one is tight then it is possible the chain has jumped a link. Check your ignition timing, at top dead centre the distributer should be just about to open up to fire on number one lead, Lastly, buy some octane booster and injector/carby cleaner $8, this may be a cheap fix. hope this helps, good luck

The engine refuses to start i have changed all the spark plugs and cables. when crank the engine it backfires out of the mass air flow sensor and seems to lock up it also cranks very slow the batt is...

it sounds to me your car is out of timing your timing chain or timing belt has jumped a tooth thats why you have a backfire ether way you need a mechanic to determin that hope this helps

Installed a timing belt and all marks line up but still won`t seems to backfire and snuff.any answer?

your camshaft is a half round out. turn the crank till it is at top dead center then take your chain off and turn the camshaft a half roud to line up with crank. then put back together and start

1995 olds tried to start cold backfired once .hasent started since.timing chain and gears good help

Hi there. Sounds like the chain jumped a couple of teeth putting the valve timing out. Check timing marks on crank and cam. Check for slop in chain. If sloppy, replace.
