Question about 2000 Ford Focus

Speedometer and Heat blower not working

My speedometer is stuck on full speed. It will sometimes jump back into place and work for awhile but then stop working again. Also the fan blower for the heat/ac does not work on any speed (1-4). It seemed to have slowly stopped working as it used to work on 1 and 4 and then just quit working on any. Any idea what these could be?

The fan motor has gone out,it was bad before it went out, drawing too many amps,so it took the blower motor resister out with it.The resister is next to the blower motor. On the speedo, check,or replace the speed sensor in the transmission,

not a good idea to do a voltage test on a computer component, it can result in damage to the ECM.
if only the speedometer is not working and the other gauges do work, the first place to start is the speed sensor, it is the most common issues with inoperative speedometers.

The speedometer jumps around and will sometimes pass 100mph then stick. It may stay there for days then hop back and work for awhile.

Assuming everything else is working either you need a new speed sensor or a replacement for your speedometer cluster. From your description I would guess the cluster. Look around on ebay and craiglist for a used replacement. Usually a cluster will fit many different years, you will be looking for newer and/or lower mileage.Do not buy a new one for that year vehicle.

Car speedo & odometer sometimes work OK, other times not at all.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.

It may be a faulty speedometer with a short inside, or a short on speedometer wirings or connector.

Whenever car vibration cause the wiring to short, there you lose speedometer and trans functionality.

You need to access the speedometer connector and wirings to
instrument panel to fix this.

Speedometer, Radio Volume Intermittently Jump

The blower problem is caused by a blower motor resister pack. That resister pack is what causes the blower motor to have more than one speed. The other problems could be related to circuits that also connect to the resister pack or use a common ground but I'm not totally convinced of that. Remember, the speedometer is electricly driven (there is no cable from the transmission to the speedometer on this car). It could also be a faulty ground going to the radio/speedometer. Do the problems seem to happen when you hit a bump?

Much good luck!

Speedometer doesnt work or bounces causing car to studder

On my 96 the PSOM module went bad. That is located on the back of the instrument cluster. Mine is analog not digital. What was happening was that the PSOM (Programable Speedometer Odometer Module) would mess up and the speedometer would jump all over the place. The tranmission is electronic and the computer would adjust and shift depending on the speed reported by the speedometer. The van would **** and shake. At slower speeds it was much better. I changed the speed sensor first without success. Changed the instument cluster and all was well.
