first of all the batter was HORRIBLE corroded, to the point that it had eaten through the positive terminal. There were no signs of problems until yesterday when I got in after running into the store for 2 minutes, and it wouldn't start. So...we replaced the battery...and ended up going to a Nissan dealer for the terminal and the whole contraption behind it. Put it back in...and now all the electrical components come on...it sounds like it wants to start, but just won't kick over. I think it might have to do with the immobilizer, but we went through those whole ignition, door lock shenanigans to no avail.

Yes. I just turned over 50k. Let me also explain that the battery was HORRIBLY corroded. I've never seen anything like it. As I was trying to clean it, the terminal fell right off as it was corroded through. Got a new terminal..got the dealer part for the contraption behind it...and a new battery. UGH. I'm wondering if it is the immobilizer...but when through all of those shenanigans too with the ignition & door locks. No avail

And yes it's very possible for a starter to just tucker out without any symptoms. From what you have told me it does sound like the starter/solenoid assy replace that and you should be a happy camper...

Your starter is bad. you may have to replace it. if the motor "wants" to turn over the starter is recieving power. but it is probably bad.

You are replaced the starter, so, I'm assuming that you disconnected the battery and its possible that your THEFT system or PASSLOCK system is armed; check in the owners manual the disarm procedure.

Some aftermark alarm system there? Check some fuse blow underhood fuse box.

Keep us updated.

Xterra won't start when the battery has juice free of corrosion and starter is freshly installed

Check the cleanliness and tightness of the battery terminals. Loosen, twist and retighten them. Also check the cleanliness and tightness of the black earth cable where it attaches to the engine block/bodywork. A bad earth can cause the symptoms you describe.

A quick check you can do is to connect a jump cable to the battery negative terminal - the earth - and connect the other end of the cable to somewhere suitable on the engine/bodywork.

If the car starts no problem with the jumper cable - it's pointing towards a bad earth/connection somewhere on the battery earth

Won't even crank. battery is good. need help with possibilities

Tap on the starter with a solid object (hammer or even a 1/2" ratchet) while someone else is turning the key...(possible starter brush hangup)
if that doesnt work , try putting it in park and then try neutral ( neutral saftey switch).
May wish to check to be sure you are using the correct key for the vehicle too.

Xterra will not turn on. windows won't roll down, doors stays locked. won't roll over at all. odometer won't come up

Do you get any dash lights when you turn the key on? If not, you could just have a dead battery.

For the past 2 weeks, when I try to start my 2003 Nissan Xterra, it seems sluggish, but the engine will turn over. On 2 separate occasions, when attempting to start the engine, it wouldn't turn over ...

Checked Cables how?

Looking & Touching isn't doing anything

You have to do a voltage drop test or remove
& clean the ends. I would do both

Remove the starter & have it tested at parts store,
assuming you don't know how to do a voltage or
current test while cranking.

The battery on my 2007 Xterra just died. Is there a possibility of some sort of issue other than the battery being dead? Its only 3 years old.

Hi,

There are possibilities regarding battery become dead and can't be charge anymore.

The first one would be the battery has a life expectancy of 1.5 years to 2 years.

The battery if less than a year and died, that will be a manufacturers fault, where the battery might have some defects when it was manufactured.

The battery died less than a year can be attributed to overcharging of electricity from your alternator.

Your lucky your battery lasted for 3 years!

Hope that clears up your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!

HAVE A 2007 NISSAN XTERRA CHANGED THE BATTERY BUT THERE IS JUST A CLICKING AND WONT START. USUALLY AFTER A DAY OR SO. IT'LL START AGAIN AND BE GOOD FOR A WEEK OR SO BEFORE ACTING UP AGAIN

It sounds like a bad connection to the battery or starter so check your wireing something is likely loose you can follow the large red wire to the starting motor and pull on it to see if the problem goes away if it dose you still have to remove it clean and retighten
