Question about 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado. I am having periodic trouble with the cruise control not wanting to engage. One time it will, and the next time it won't. This has been happening for a while now. When it doesn't work it doesn't want to work at all. Then the next time I drive it and try to engage the cruise the crazy thing works fine. This is frustrating, needless to say. I have not had anyone look at it or troubleshoot it because it acts the way it does. Can you tell me what the problem might be? I have also had the same thing happen to the snowflake button for the a/c. The a/c button acting weird has just happened once, but it makes me think there is a "gremlin" or something in my vehicle. Please don't call me crazy, because I'm not! I just don't understand what is going on. I am assuming it has something to do with either electrical problems or fuse problems. HELP!

I'm not a mechanic but I have 04 silverado. the speedometer would only work sometimes. GM had a recall on the whole dash unit and they replaced it for free. You might want to ask a dealer about that also.

When cruse is set, why does it not hold going down hill

Cruise control only maintains speed by utilizing the accelerator. To speed up it increases it and during slowing is removes it. The cruise control will not apply brakes in the event of a steep downhill run. In this case the vehicle will start to accelerate in the same manner as if the cruise control was not engaged. But in theses cases, most cruise controls, once the speed exceeds a certain amount above the set speed, will auto-disengage as a safety feature.

Intermittent Cruise Control Issue - cuts out when small bump in road is hit and may or may not re-engage after that.

Check the wire connector that plugs into the cruise control under the hood. Sounds like a loose connection. Remove the and reinsert the wire connector several times to make a better connection. Stepping on the brake pedal disengages the cruise control by a switch on the brake pedal, not the computer.

Cruise control on 1996 Chevy Silverado won't hold speed

Possibly a broken wire in the steering column. Wires goint through the steering column for the cruise are so fragile when the tilt is used alot causing the wires to brake. Part is $70.00 through advance auto. Cheapest I've found if you order online.

03 chevy z71 cruise contol problem

There are a few things you can try. First, check your
brake lights, if they do not work the problem may be
in the stoplight sw circuit. Also there are 3 fuses you
can check, 1 is a 25amp in the fuse block under the
hood the next 2 are in the fuse block under the dash.
One is the 15amp stoplight fuse and the other is a
10amp turn sig fuse. These fuses are either directly
or indirectly related to the cruise ctrl. Next check the
cruise switchs accel/coast set/resume if either sw.
was sticking in any posistion for 90 seconds or more,
the cruise ctrl. will shut down. There are trouble codes that will set but they won't trip the check engine light. You'll need an obdII scanner to recover
them from the memory. If you don't have one, go to
autozone/napa or advance auto parts they will scan it
free. The codes of interest are po571 stoplight switch
po567 and po568 the cruise ctrl switch's. And any
other codes related to the torque converter clutch -
the speed sensor - throttle actuator control.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

2004 Chevy Cavalier Cruise Control Problem

here are two switches that are the usual causes of the cruise kicking out. they are both under the dash. One is the switch for the brake lamps (stop light switch). the other is for the clutch if you have a manual transmission.

if you follow the brake pedal up under the dash you'll find two switches at the top of the pedal. (it may be one switch but I think its two). the top one would be for the cruise control. if the switch is loose it will cause the cruise control to think you're stepping on the brake and that will disengage the cruise control

same with the clutch pedal if you have a manual transmission; if the switch is loose it will indicate you are pushing the clutch pedal in and cause the cruise to kick out

other than that you'll have to check all of the connectors. If it does engage then the fuses and actuators should be good and it would be a loose connector or switch that's kicking it out

also, i assume your speedometer works; if its not then that's your problem as the cruise won't engage under 30 mph
