It sounds like the universal joints are going out. get them checked before its to late cause if they go out while your driving it can tear up the transmission and bend the drive shaft. I recently told a girl to change her's in her truck and she waited a couple of weeks and it broke while she was driving and it broke the end of the drive shaft off and broke the rear seal in the transmission!!! it will get exspensive very fast!

I would investigate the transfer case. By your description here it sounds as if the gears inside are worn and the drive chain inside is rubbing, causing the loud noise you hear.

Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

I hear a loud grinding noise when i drive my car

Check front tyres & wheel bearings espesially the R/H/F. Feel tyre for high / low spots on inside & jack up & spin wheel if you get noise while jacked up it is not the tyres but wheel bearing or brake pads but more than likly a crook bearing by the sound of it. It needs to be tended to ASAP

check the front wheel bearings. jack up each tire and see if it feels loose, if it does its a bearing problem. heres how I check for a bad wheel bearing.jackup car tire off the ground, get in car put e-brake on. start car. put foot on brake. put it in gear, and let it up very slow do not touch the gas. if its a bearing you will here it in the wheels. do the same on the other side of car. a bad wheel bearing will howl or grind. when wheels are turning.

What would cause a loud roaring in the back seat of my 2001 Monte Carlo as I am driving?

That roaring noise should be a wheel bearing. Jack up the rear wheels and spin the tires by hand. You can hear a grinding noise if the noise inside the car is as load as you state.. The only other noise that will be like that is the differental gears inside the drive axle

if the noise is at wheel speed then what ever is causing the noise is rotateing, could be a drive shaft or wheel bearing, jack the car up at the wheel you think is the problem and ceck for ecessive movement to pin point your fault. hope this helps
