What is a scan tool

A scan tool allows for the OBD II (On Board Diagnostics) codes to be read from the engine computer in a car. These are common electronic diagnostics tools used by automotive technicians. They are usually used when a check engine light comes on to determine the error codes associated with the check engine light.

They almost always connect via a standard plug on the divers side under the dash.

Most automotive parts supplier will check a car with complementary service to determine the codes stored in a customers automobile.

My check eng light on when i acc it start blinking

As a general rule, a steady Check Engine light suggests a lesser problem and the need to schedule an appt. to get the engine diagnosed/scanned for codes at your earliest convenience. When the Check Engine light is blinking, it generally means the issue is more severe and it's recommended that the vehicle should not be driven and taken immediately to a shop (possibly even having it towed) to prevent any further costly damage. It's impossible to advise what is causing the light to come on without connecting a scanner to search for trouble codes. Could be something relatively minor such as a vacuum leak, bad spark plugs/wires, ignition coil, sensor or fuel injector. Or, something much more involved such as internal engine component failure. If you want to try a little self-diagnosis first, most auto parts stores will lend you an OBD-II scan tool...and, will usually offer to help you hook it up and take the readings in their parking lot.

Blazer service engine soon light reset

If it is an early blazer, pre 1996 and has the OBD I system, you can reset the computer by removing the positive battery cable and touching it to metal or 10 seconds to ground the system. Then hook it back to the battery and if the light comes back on then you need to jump the "A" and "B" terminals to read the code. If your blazer is 1996 or newer then you will have the OBD II system and will need a scan tool to reset the light.

My 05cavalier 2.2eco tec quit on me going down the highway. initially thought timing chain but not it. no fire at spark plugs need to no how to check ecm and crank sensor.

You will need to procure an OBD-II scan tool. You can purchase this or perhaps rent/borrow one. Autozone has a tool rental program if I recall correctly and may be able to provide you with one.

There is an OBD-II diagnositics port under the dash directly under the steering column. There will most likely be directions with the tool and/or provided by the person you got it from.

If you didn't get instructions:

1. Plug it in and turn it on if it does not automatically do so.

2. Start the engine or turn on the electrical system, depends on what the scanner directions say

3. Press the button to read the codes if it does not do so on it's own

4. Scroll through the codes and write them down. OBD-II does have a list of standardized codes, but there are also GM specific ones. There are pending codes which should be noted and fault codes which are the big problems.

5. Kill the engine/electrical system and remove the tool.

OBD 2 connecotr is usually under dash on driver side. But OBD 2 did not start officially until 1996.

OBD 1 before that. Could be under hood.

Check engine 'light on' non stop, but car drive without problem, maybe power or accelerate is litle under the max of performance and fuel consumption is litle more.

Hi, your computer has detected a fault and stored a trouble code. Assuming your car is 1996 or later model year, a scan of the OBD II connector is needed to extract the trouble code. Auto parts chains in the US offer free scannning services. Please get a scan, write down the codes, and send them to us for repair advice. Thanks for using FixYa.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5932051-check_engine_light_check. These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Looking for the OBDll connector for a 1996 Toyota Corolla ll Windy Model with a1N-T, 1453 cc turbo diesel engine. Steering wheel is on the passenger side of the car. Need this info for a friend. He has...

Look under the dash near where the steering wheel is usually located (on the driver's side).

Was this vehicle marketed in the U.S.?
1996-97 MODELS NOTE: These models require the use of the Toyota's hand held scan tool or an equivalent OBD II compliant scan tool.
  1. Prepare the scan tool according to the manufacturers instructions.
  2. Connect the OBD II scan tool, to the DLC3 under the instrument panel. The DLC3 on the 1996-97 models is located on the drivers side under the dash 88274pa2.jpg
NOTE: When the diagnosis system is switched from the normal mode to the check mode, it erases all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and freeze frame data recorded. Before switching modes, always check the DTC and freeze frame data and write them down.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON and switch the OBD II scan tool switch on.
  4. Use the OBD II scan tool to check the DTC and freeze frame data. Write them down.
  5. Compare the codes found to the applicable diagnostic code chart. If necessary, refer to the individual component tests in this section. If the component tests are OK, test the wire harness and connectors for shorts, opens and poor connections.

Engine miss fire

Engine misfires can be caused by a variety of anomalies.

Check the computer with an OBD-II Scanner. I just got one from Walmart for $98 plus tax, and it has English descriptions of codes that it reads.

It will tell you which cylinder(s) are missing and if you have any sensors that have issues or problems.

This is an invaluable tool for fixing engine misfires. Good luck to you.
