Question about 1992 Chevrolet C1500

Temp gauge below 100 and I changed sensor and changed thermostat and neither worked. got any suggestions?

We're is the coolant temperature sense located on a 2008 trailblazer lt


Hi Janice , Before I say where the coolant temp. sensor is I'd just like to make you aware of a couple of thing's before you replace this sensor needlessly .It's one thing if you have a DTC diagnostic trouble code for the sensor but another if your temp. gauge isn't work ! You see the coolant temp. sensor is an input to the engine computer , not directly to the temp. gauge.
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the engine coolant temperature as determined by the engine control module (ECM). The IPC receives a serial data message from the ECM indicating the engine coolant temperature. The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to 100°F (40°C) or below if: ?€¢
The ECM detects a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit.

The IPC detects a loss of serial data communications with the ECM.

'05 Grand Am 3.4 V6 Temp Gauge not Working all of a sudden.


Sounds like a temp sensor or wiring problem.
You may only have one sensor for both the gauge and the engine computer.
If the computer temp sensor fails, or is not sending a signal to the engine computer, the fans will run as a precaution to keep the engine from overheating.
If you have replaced the correct sensor, it could be a wiring problem, or the engine coolant could be low enough to not touch the sensor.
If the coolant sensor is not sending a signal, the check engine light should also be on.

I have a 2008 Chevy Colorado and today my temp


when a temp gauge drops to cold ,it indicates a problem in the cooling system
temp gauge sender units need water to activate the resistance that makes the gauge read so a falling gauge indicates no water around the sender unit --- air lock in the system--faulty wire connection to the gauge sender unit
the ac unit is not connected to the temp gauge so there may be another separate problem there
the temp sensor is an entirely different unit to the temp gauge sender unit and the short term working would be from an altered coolant level from changing that sensor --air lock in system
the temp sensor connects to the ECM to activate the fans and monitor engine operating temp so as to keep the air/fuel mixture exact for the engine conditions
the temp sender unit just makes the temp gauge read
a faulty thermostat will either be stuck open and the engine temp will take a long time to rise or it will be stuck closed and that will cause an overheat very quickly

code p0118 refers to engine coolant temperature (ETC) sensor ---circuit malfunction===causes---coolant thermostat---wiring open circuit/short to positive---wiring short to ground---ground wire defective---ECT sensor.. The temp gauge works off a temperature sender unit separate to the coolant sensor and if it is reading 100 then it indicates an overheat situation in the engine . Probably why the engine light is coming on. As the thermostat is in the list of causes I would replace it as a precaution. The coolant sensor is what tells the CPU to turn on the electric fans to cool the radiator

it could very well be a bad gauge. when it shows the engine to be overheated or at the least very hot, check the actual temp at the water outlet where the upper radiator hose attaches to the engine. use a non contact thermometer to check the temp so as not to get burned in the process. if the thermometer reads way different than the gauge, the gauge is bad.

Check to see if the fans are operational, anything below 35 MPH the fans cool the radiator, anything above is cooled by air passing thru rad.

There are two temp sensors, one is for the ECM and the other is for the instrument panel gauge.

The one located just under the thermostat goose neck is the one for the gauge. See picture below.

I have a 1999 Nissan Sentra SE, 2.0 engine. The temperature guage doesn't work. Every now and then (not often) the needle will go up just above the C, then as soon as it goes up, it goes right back down...


if the car has really great heat its uaslly not the thermostat if thermostat were stuck open it would give you cold heater inside the car. my guess is temp sensor for the gauge its usally located by the thermostat housing or near the computer temp sensor not sure on this car once you locate the correct sensor you can ground to body and check the gauge movement could be bad connection at sensor . hope this helps thunderboltz
