You can tell by looking in the radaitor filler neck, with the car cold remove the radaitor cap start the car let the engine run until the thermostat opens the fluid level will rise and fall until the thermostat opens once it opens it will go down look in to the filler neck the fluid should be moving slowly find the throtal cable and raise the engine idle up if the fluid level lowers and it looks like it is circulating through the radaitor ,then the water pump is working ,,you may have a head gasket leaking ,check if there is water in the oil ,if ther is ,the oil will look a little milky light color or if it has not gotten that bad yet it will start smokin out of the tail pipe white . this will tell you if the head gasket is no good

It will either leak antifreeze out of the weep hole on the pump or the old antifreeze was so old that turned into an acis and ate the blades off the pump. hmmmm. you know what try changing the coolent bottle out, this year intrepid had problems with the bottles going bad, just take my advise about the bottle or go to the delearship and ask their mechanics

Does anybody have a video link on how to flush the cooling system on a GM 3.1L SFI OHV 6cyl motor? I need a vid for this particular motor cause mine is still overheating & i have looked everywhere.

flushing a cooling system is the same method as any other motor

do it without the thermostat fitted
or water pump opening

sacrifice an old radiator hose to adapt a garden hose fitting
for radiator flush

air in system fix
your thermostat housing has no air bleed valve
no top radiator cap

old school way
heater on full
run motor till thermostats fully open
burp radiator hoses
wait till water is running up into over flow bottle without bubble
replace cap
turn off heater
correct level in over flow bottle

why still over heating
you fitted everything i would have ... yet still overheat
possibles
leaking inlet manifold gaskets
hose clamps loose
cooling fans spinning too slow
thermostatic fan switch faulty
aluminum radiator is a big one
air ..fins bent or some water channels blocked

or possible head gasket leak

Car overheating

Two things to check:

1. Make sure you do not have an air bubble in your cooling system. Easiest way is to park facing uphill and let the car cool off. Remove the radiator cap, start the car and let run until the thermostat opens. If there are air bubbles in the cooling system the should be forced out. Top off fluid.
2. Are you sure that the cooling fan is running? When the car is getting hot, open the hood and make sure the radiator fan is actually turning.

I just bought a 1995 jetta and it's running at 260 degrees. Is this too high, and if it is then what would be causing this?

CHECK TO SEE IF BOTH COOLING FANS RUNNING ARE RUNNING WHEN ENGINE RUNNING START OVERHEATING IF COOLING FANS NOT WORKING CHECK COOLING FANS LARGE FUSES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OR YOU COULD FAULTY COOLING FANS THERMO SWITCH BOTTOM LEFT SIDE OR RADIATOR.IF COOLING FANS IS WORKING WHILE ENGINE RUNNING.RADIATOR CORES AND HEATER CORE COULD BE CLOGGED.COOLANT SYSTEM NEED FLUSHING. THE THERMOSTAT PARTIALLY CLOSED CAUSE ENGINE OVER HEAT.CHECK WATERPUMP WEEP HOLE IF LEAKING WATER PUMP NEED REPLACING.

My mechanic told me I had a radiator leak. I replaced the radiator. The car still overheats. I have talked to my mechanic several times and now he says I need a thermostat. Whay didn't he replace the...

the cooling systems consists of a radiator, radiator cap, water pump, thermostat, hoses, heater core and sometime a heater control valve that open water lines to heater core. You may need a cooling system flush if water pump, radiator have been replaced. flush the system.change the thermostat and have the heater core checked too if you can get to it.
does the cooling fan kick on to cool the radiator..check that too.replace radiator cap and check cooling fan yourself...let me know if need anything else.
Thanks for using fixya and please vote.

The water boils out of the coolant surge tank, and also is over heating

try change out thermostat maybe staying shut-radiator fins plugged wash out outside with hose and water. radiator may be plugged in cooling tubes flush out cooling system-check fan and water pump belt-fan bearings or water pump could be going bad and not moving water

My honda is over heatin why

CHECK COOLANT.IF COOLANT TOO LOW IT WILL CAUSE OVERHEATING.IF COOLANT LEVEL IS GOOD.YOUR THERMOSTAT IS STICKING CLOSED.IF ALL IS WELL.YOUR RADIATOR IS CLOGGED UP NEED FLUSHING.ENGINE BLOCK WATER PASSAGES IS STOPPED UP.LEAKING HEAD GASKET WILL CAUSE OVERHEATING. USE A SCANNER TO CHECK TO MAKE SURE COOLANT FAN IS WORKING.AND COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS WORKING.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS WHAT CAUSES THE COOLANT FAN TO TURN ON AT 190 TO 200 DEGREES.IF COOLANT FAN NOT WORKING.HOT WIRE IT USING JUMPER WIRE TO BATTERY. IF FAN RUNS YOU HAVE A BAD FUSE OR RELAY.IF NOT FAN MOTOR IS FAULTY.REPLACE IT.ALSO CHECK WATER PUMP IF YOU SEE SIGNS OF ANTIFREEZE LEAKING AROUND WATER PUMP.REPLACE IT.ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 % WATER AND 50 % ANTIFREEZE. IN COOLANT SYSTEM TOO MUCH WATER WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.ALL OF THOSE THINGS IS POSSIBLE CAUSES THAT WILL CAUSE YOUR CAR TO OVER HEAT.

Overheating

You could have several issues here. A blockage in the radiator, bad coolant temp sensor, (not turning the cooling fan on) a bad cooling fan motor. sounds as if maybe one of these may be your primary issue, and the cause of the overheating that originally caused your head gasket problem. Hope this helps

Cooling fans

flush and clean your radiator.you can get radiator flush and cleaner at the parts store. if that doesn't work take it and have it cleaned . that's if your fan and thermostat is working properly, which they probably are unless i'm misunderstanding you.

your fans need replacing try hooking them up straight to battery to check if they spin fast its not the fans but the wiring.
