Question about 2000 Porsche 911 Carrera

1 Answer

1999 Porsche Carrera leaking coolant. Can't see or find the leak, not enough room underneath. It is leaking directly over the exhaust pipe. Is there a discharge hose in case of overheating that might be the problem. Maybe I was low on coolant and it heated up?

Hi, I have a very similar problem, did you find a solution? I've just posted my issue, so could share any solutions I get. My flatmate also works for Porsche, so may have an idea when he returns from work...

The only coolant lines would go from your rad to engine block and lines to your tranny, what part of your exhaust is it dripping on (close to the catalytic converter,or on the tailpipe)??

Hi , i have a porsche 928 s2 . when the engine has been running for a couple of mins it starts to smoke from the engine bay , it looks like oil is coming out of one of the gaskets at the top ? help jim

if the oil is leaking onto the exhaust pipe this will cause smoke as the exhaust pipe gets very hot & burns the oil, you will need to find out just where the oil is leaking from & repair the leak by replacing the gasket or whatever is causing the leak.....hope this helps......cheers.

Oil appears in the coolant reservoir bottle

Hi,

To my knowledge, most oil coolers would be In Front Right Fender for 1995-1998 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 and would look something like the image below.
966b111.jpg
Although I have strong doubts that your seals are needing replacement. Should they be worn out, defective oil seals would exhibit leaks that would be noticeable. Nonetheless, if you would follow the two hoses connected to the oil cooler, they would lead you right back to their entrance and exit points in the engine.

Oil mixing with the coolant and visible in the coolant reservoir indicates another problem, most probably head gasket.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

What is the comon fault

The most serious common faults are with the standard 3.4 engine in the early 996 Carrera models (not applicable to Turbo engined vehicles which is a different engine design):

1. The engine cylinder liners develop hairline cracks. (Engine replacement or rebuild required).

2. The intermediate shaft bearings fail in these engines (a well known design fault). Failure requires engine replacement.

3. The rear main seals in the engines fail as exhibited by a slowly worsening oil leak. The seal needs to be replaced when they leak. It's an expensive job.

Problems 1 and 2 are serious have resulted in many engine replacements. Problems 2 and 3 remained when Porsche upgraded to the standard 3.6 engine in the series two 996 Carrera models (problems not applicable to Turbo engines)..

There are a few other issues such as Air Conditioning condensers that clog up with road debris and eventually become porous and fail.

Where is the horn located on a 1999 Porsche 996 - I think I have a short in it as if you hit a bump hard enough it will quickly honk

You can find the horn on the leftside (face to the car) underneath the protectionshield. If you have small hands you can dismount it form there (not easy).Otherwise you have to take off the bumper.

Green fluid leaking from pipe on right hand side!

Bright green fluid is usually coolant. In some cases washer fluid is green too but it sounds like it's likely coolant. Better get that checked out by a professional before it becomes a bigger problem. Good luck!
