Question about 1997 Jeep Cherokee Country
The latch on the gate holds and locks itself on a peg on the floor panel. These are adjustable and after time can move causing the problems you have now.
You may have to get in the boot / trunk and remove the inner panel to access the lock internally to open but try this first:
Pull up latch handle and keep holding it up until open, shoulder firmly the backdoor as if you are trying to close it hard, it should click, then pull open.

Have a 97 jeep cherokee 8 cylinder, car starts hard, if I flutter the pedal it will fire up and run strong, but there is no low idle and will not remain running. Even if I let the engine warm up there is no low idle after that? I have never had a problem with this car starting in the cold before, just starting to get cold again now, and wont stay running, any suggestions?
