Question about 2001 Ford F150 Styleside SuperCrew

I need the part (unsure of name, possibly brake dust shield) that connects to the four bolts around the axel,has a slot for the brake caliper to fit on the rotor. the vehicle is a 2001 ford f150 supercrew 4.6l 4wd with disc brakes{rear drivers side}

Any Wrecking yard will have the backing plate, if it is the rear either side will work, however you will have to remove the axle, to do that you will need to pull the 3rd member pan off and replace the oil, you will need to remove the c-clips to pull the axle out, the plate normally won't come off without the axle being removed first.

Its called "the back plate" dont know what the part no is though but have a look in a brakers yard they will have the part you wont,

Rear brakes. is there a heat shield or is it a dust shield


If it is in front of the passenger side rear brake, it is a dust sheild installed in an attempt to keep the brake pads from wearing out prematurely. This does not work very well. Do what I do and double the life of your pads. I remove the lower brake caliper stud and flip up the caliper, remove the pads and swap with the drivers side. The drivers side does not wear for some reason, and you will probably have to squeeze in the caliper for the pads to fit back over the rotor. This only takes 4-5 minutes if you do it every 10k miles or so (keeps everything from rusting stuck). I do it to mine when I do a winter tire changeover.

I am going to assume since you have a late model car that you have 4 wheel disc brakes. You will need to take all four wheels off to get to the caliper. The caliper is usually held on with two bolts or pins. Sometimes there are retaining springs on the back of the bolt or pin, so double check for these. There is one pin/bolt in the front and one in back of the caliper. These are called floating calipers. You will need to take both bolts out and then give the caliper a smack with you hand or a small hammer and it will pop loose. The caliper needs to to be moved up over the rotor.

Take the caliper off the rotor. At this point it will be hanging from the brake line. Be careful with it, if you let it hang it could damage the brake line. You can lay the caliper on top of the rotor and pull the pads out of the caliper. If you do not have a caliper piston compression tool get a very large pair of channel locks and wrap a rag around the jaws. Use the channel locks to compress the pistons in the cliper as far as they will go. The new pads will be a lot thicker and if you do not compress the caliper you will never get them back on with the news pads. The point of the rag is so you do not score the pistons in your caliper.

The pads may or may not come with anti-squeal jel/grease. I would get some if they dont. You apply this to the back of the pad before installation. The new pads have spring clips on the back that just slip over slots in the calipers. Before careful not to confuse the front pad with the back pad upon removal, they can look really similiar in size and shape and sometimes you can install the wrong one in the wrong location and it will not function correctly.

Place your pads into you caliper then put the caliper back on the rotor. Put the bolts back into the caliper and tighten them down. I am unsure of the torque specs for your caliber bolts, but tight and a quarter of a turn more is a good rule of thumb.

Follow the above procedure for all 4 wheels.

How to remove rear axels

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Support at frame behind front springs.
  2. Remove front wheels.
  3. Scribe alignment marks on propeller shaft and axle yoke for proper assembly, then disconnect propeller shaft at axle yoke.
  4. Disconnect connecting rod at steering knuckles.
  5. Disconnect shock absorbers at axle housing.
  6. Remove stabilizer bar connecting links to spring tie plates attaching bolts, if equipped.
  7. Disconnect breather tube at axle housing.
  8. Disconnect stabilizer bar link bolts at spring clips.
  9. Remove disc brake calipers, rotors and brake shields.
  10. Remove U-bolts and tie plates.
  11. Support axle assembly with suitable jack to relieve spring tension.
  12. Loosen rear spring shackle to spring attaching bolts.
  13. Remove front spring shackle to spring attaching bolts and lower spring to floor.
  14. Remove axle from under vehicle.
  15. Reverse procedure to install.

I am trying to loosen a caliper bleeder valve.


Try hitting the area around the bleeder with a hammer .. it may help .. bleeders are tough if they don't go after being heated/lubed. You could try loosening the line into the caliper .. that may allow enough of a bleed, banking on the fact that there is still brake fluid in that caliper .. otherwise you may end up replacing that caliper.

REAR WHEEL BEARING/ HUB

Removal Procedure
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting in General Diagnosis.
  2. Remove the wheel and the tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
    1. Remove and support the brake caliper. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement (Front) or Brake Caliper Replacement (Rear) in Brakes.
    2. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
    3. Remove the ABS sensor wire connector.
    4. Remove the four bolts from the control arm.
    5. Remove the hub and bearing from the control arm.
    6. Remove the brake shield from the control arm.
    7. Clean the control arm face and the bore before installing the hub and the bearing.
    Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
    1. Install the brake shield and the hub and the bearing to the control arm with the four bolts. Be careful not to drop the hub and the bearing, as it could be damaged. Reconnect the ABS sensor. Tighten the hub and bearing bolts to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.).
    2. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
    3. Install the brake caliper. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement (Front) or Brake Caliper Replacement (Rear) in Disc Brakes.
    4. Install the wheel and the tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Wheels, Tires and Alignment. Tighten the wheel nuts to 140 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
    5. Lower the vehicle.

Removal of brake calipers and pads on 1992 xj6 jaguar


Hi Jasa

Unless you are mechanically competent, I would not advise you carry out this procedure yourself, but leave it to the professionals.

If you are mechanically minded, and competent, the pads are relatively easy to replace, as follows.

Jack up the vehicle and put on stands, if you don´t have access to a hoist?

Remove wheels, and open the hood, put some kitchen roll around the brake fluid reservoir, to catch any excess brake fluid, when you push back the brake caliper pistons, if it´s been overfilled.
On the front brake caliper's, you are best to put in a little lever between pads and disc, and ease back the piston to fully retracted, unless you have a small G clamp which will do the same job when caliper is adrift.

Remove the 2 x 13mm caliper securing bolts and swing off the caliper, and support with a piece of wire, don´t just let it dangle on the brake hose.
Remove the brake pads, and sensor wire, check the caliper piston dust cover for splits, and clean caliper, housing, etc, and disc, with brake cleaner.

Fit the new brake pads to the caliper, and refit with 2 new securing bolts with blue lock tite, (normally supplied with the B/Pads.)

The rear caliper´s are pretty much the same as the front, although you can just undo the top bolt and swing the caliper back, but I usually remove both, for ease of cleaning, and inspection.

After rear caliper´s and pads and sensor wire, and new bolts are fitted, pump the brake pedal with the ignition on, and just run around, and check there are no leaks from the caliper pistons.
Check the fluid level, and lower with suction syringe if necessary.

By the way, 1. When did you last change your brake fluid ?
2. Adjust your front wheel bearings end float ?

You could do this now before you fit the wheels.?

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. If equipped, disconnect the brake pad wear sensor from the harness.
  3. Counterhold the lower sliding pin using a thin open-end wrench and remove the caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  4. Pivot the caliper upward or if necessary remove the upper caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  5. Using a brake caliper retraction tool, select the appropriate sized piston press arbor and install the tool onto the brake caliper. Following the tool manufacturer's recommendations, use the tool to rotate the caliper piston clockwise as it is pressed into the brake caliper housing, until it is fully retracted.

  1. Clean the brake caliper and all sliding surfaces. With the caliper piston pressed fully back into the caliper housing, check for leaking fluid and damaged dust boots.
  2. If equipped, install a new brake pad wear sensor in the pad if the plastic part has been worn through on the old sensor. New sensors are not required unless the wire inside the plastic part has been exposed.
  3. Lubricate the slider bolts with approved brake grease.
  4. Install the brake pads onto the bracket assembly, and then carefully lower the caliper over the caliper mount. Check and make sure that the pad springs are correctly seated.
  5. Replace all removed caliper-to-sliding pin bolts and torque to:
  6. 1990-97 Passat models: 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
  7. 1998-00 Passat models: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
  8. If equipped, connect the brake wear sensor wire to the harness. Check for a good connection as most problems with the sensor circuit are caused by faulty connections. Check that the wire is held by the loop in the dust cover and the connector is held at the clips.
  9. Install the wheels and hand tighten the lug bolts. Lower the vehicle carefully until the tires begin to contact the surface and torque the lug bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern to:
  10. M12 x 1.5 lug bolts: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
  11. M14 x 1.5 lug bolts: 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)
