Code 17 is an EGR control fault, and that is about as much as i can find.

My engine light came on after slowing moving through bumper to bumper traffic for 45 minutes and the digital temp said 71 degrees. Do I need to take it in or was it just overheating?


Most likely the 71 was your outside temperature but yes I would check fluid levels for the radiator. You can also have codes read at auto parts stores for free

Check engine light flashes 4-3-7-1 what will be the code number


I would guess 2 codes--43 and 71. 43 says starter signal not reaching ECM. Are you push starting the truck? If not, might be a bad wire from the ignition switch to the computer.
71 is low EGR gas temp. Could be the sensor signal is not reaching the computer but more likely the EGR valve is not opening. May be stuck/clogged, has torn diaphragm, or is not getting vacuum. I believe the vacuum is controlled by a thermal valve. Check to see that the thermal valve is getting vacuum from the intake manifold and opening to deliver vacuum to the EGR valve when the engine reaches operating temp.

Sentra, it is an indication that the computer has recognized a problem within its sphere of influence. Once the problem has been addressed and corrective action completed, the computer can be reset by erasing the existing codes.

  1. Step 1 Insert the code scanner's connector into the OBD port located under the dash to the right of the steering column.
  2. Step 2 Turn the ignition key to the run position. Make sure the engine is off.
  3. Step 3 Press the button for "Read" on the code scanner. Within less than 1 minute, the scanner will display all failure codes that are stored in its memory.
  4. Step 4 Write down the failure codes displayed by the scanner. Cross-reference the codes with the code sheet that comes with the scanner. The codes are displayed with a letter followed by a four-digit number code. Deciphering these codes by cross-referencing them with the code sheet offers an explanation of the failure.
  5. Step 5 Turn the key off. Correct the failure so that the computer can be reset.
  6. Step 6 Turn the ignition key on, keeping the engine off. Press the "Erase" button on the scanner. Start the vehicle and allow it to run for 5 minutes. Watch for the check engine light to come back on. If it does, the problem has not been corrected. If it stays off, the problem has been successfully resolved.

Check engine light comes on after approx. one minute. My code reader gives me a 214 in continuous memory ( cylinder ID circuit failure). I clear the code and it comes back. What is giving me this code?...


look 214 is not a valid code for a 1995 escort, this is an OBD1 system. here is a list of trouble codes for this year of ford no matter the model.

You should find the diagnostic connector under your hood normally by the fender on the battery side. By just using your test light and a jumper wire, it will tell you what kind of problem you got.

KEY ON ENGINE OFF (KOEO) TEST
Model years 1984-1995 all models of Ford
1. Make sure engine is fully warmed. If in doubt, run engine at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes.
2. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds for system to shut off. Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual).
3. Hook up light and jumper (or a tester if you have one). Turn key to ON (do not start engine). Read the codes.

How to do it?

Example code 23: your test light should flash 2 long consecutive flashes followed by 3 short pulses.

The CHECK (check engine) light can account for a hundred plus different failures on a modern vehicle. It is there to let you know of failures in the emissions or drivetrain systems of your car.
Essentially it can be as simple a bad gas cap or as complex as internal transmission part failures. You will need to take it to a repair shop or an auto parts store to have the diagnostic code scanned to get an idea of what is wrong. Most auto parts stores will do this for free.
The light can go out by itself if the problem goes away, but can take a very long time. Certain codes will take over 250 drive cycles without a problem detected before they clear.
If the light is lit solid, it is typically fine to drive until you can get it diagnosed. If the light is FLASHING, however, it indicates a misfire so great that severe engine damage may occur. If the light is FLASHING, turn the car off and have it towed to prevent damage.

You'll need a scanner which is compatible with Hyundai's ABS system to retrieve any DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) stored in its computer. Any time the ABS light comes on, there's a DTC stored in its computer - that code will tell you where the problem exists. Then you can go from there.
