Question about 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

2 Answers

Two days ago had the starter replaced on my 97 Jetta and yesterday the check engine light went on. I took the car to Autozone to see what code came up. This is the code P1476. The car is runnin fine, just do not know what to do?

My thought is that one of a couple of the O2 'Oxygen Sensor' went bad. There is possibly 2 to 3 of these on your engine and exhaust. If you have a great amount of miles 'over 60 to 70 K or even more, this is when they go out. Usually starters last a good 100K. Will probably have to take it into a mechanic or purchase a new one from Autozone and replace them one at a time. Check Engine light goes off when you find the one that's causing you the problem!

Hi:
The P1476 code comes up when the fuel tank leak detection pump attempts to pressurize the tank to 2PSI, and that pressure does not hold as it should. If the EVAP valve is hanging open, then you'll see the P1476 code.

My recommendation: remove the EVAP purge valve and see if you can blow through it. It should be sealed when there is no electrical power applied to it. If it's not, replace the valve, and that will fix your problem.

Usually this P0456 code is caused by an incorrect or faulty gas cap. Filling the fuel tank with the engine running could conceivable cause this code as well or if the cap wasn't properly tightened. Any of the following could also be the cause:
  • A small leak in any of the EVAP hoses or fuel tank hoses
  • A small leak in the purge valve or vent valve
  • The EVAP Canister may be leaking

Engine need service or a faulty sensor, change oil and filter check sensors, if looks good, do not worry about it.

Engine misses at idle and after shifting (Jetta 97)

Did you by chance check the resistance of your plug wires? They have a tendency of breaking down over a period of time and need replaced. The spark plugs would have told you what was wrong with the engine many times.

sorry , but no good news, if you are using a fair amount of oil it has most likely reclogged the converter. unbolt the pipe just before converter and run car, if it seems to run better then it is time for a set of rings and another new converter
