We have a ford ranger 2002 model 2.5 diesel,when it is cold it starts ok but when engine warm it takes about 20 turns to start each time getting faster till engine picks up,have put a new fuel filter on but not better

These International engines can be difficult to diagnose without the proper tools; namely Ford's I.D.S., or Navistar's DLC.

As for the o-ring the dealer was hinting at, they may have meant the o-ring on the fuel injection pressure regulator. I have witnessed these leak and cause difficult or no starting. This component is located at the rear of the engine below the turbo exhaust supply tubes. A specialty socket is needed to replace it (35mm 12 point socket which resembles an O2 sensor socket), although replacement is most likely unnecessary considering that your vehicle does eventually start. If this were indeed the culprit, your engine would not start. There is a test port next to this regulator to test oil pressure (bolt with allen head relief). A high pressure gauge which reads greater than 5,000 psi is necessary to test at this port. When your engine doesn't start, try checking what the oil pressure is at this port. A minimum of 3,000 psi is needed for the engine to start and 5,000 psi is prefered

Other sources of this problem could be the intake air temperature sensor, oil temperature sensor, or wiring compromises. It's a shame the dealer didn't want to spend the time necessary to pinpoint your problem. So glad I'm out of that crooked industry.

you need to have the engine coolant switch checked,since the computer relies solely on sensors,the ect tells the computer how cold or hot it is so the computer will make it a rich or lean mixture to start the engine,if it tells the computer that it is 75 degrees the computer will lean the mixture like starting a car in the winter without a choke.

Toyota lucida hard to start most times. occasionaly ok. 2.2 diesel. everything seems to work as should


in cold weather diesel gels up and sometimes causes a no start issue..a cetane fuel additive helps with this issue. if temps go below 20 degrees, add a quart per tankful of cetane to the fuel to help start on cold mornings. also diesels require more amperage to crank than gas engines do..thus a stronger battery is needed..

Your diesel requires the glow-plugs to heat up to start when cold. This is why the truck smoked excessively when you pull it to start the motor. Siince you are not having the glow-plugs warm up via the "Timer" for them and you are getting intermittent Solenoid response from the tickler wires on the Solenoid, there is one common point.

The Ignition switch is the common point. You should also observe if your "Start" light is getting the feedback from the glow plug "Timer". Replace the Ignition switch and see if you hear the "Timer" clicking before a cold start. You can also take a 12 volt test-light or gauge and check the wires to the glow-plugs when cold. The glowplugs should be getting power from the until the glow-plugs heat up.

Remove and check the glow-plugs. A good way is to remove all of them, and take some jumper cables to each briefly. BE careful as they can melt and you can ruin the threads with the jumpers. Comparison is the best way to describe testing them. They should heat up the same for all. The glow-plugs that stay dark the longest are bad.

Ask the auto parts place if they show an Ignition relay for your Diesel. This would cover the poor starts when warm. Also tell them it is a Diesel when getting the Ignition switch.

Just got an 1998 Isuzu Wizard (diesel), some times


It sounds like the fuel is gelled, is it cold where you are and what are running for fuel? If your in freezing weather you should be running blended fuel, straight No.2 will gel at about 25 degrees (F). Take a hair dryer or heat gun and warm the fuel filter up. Or if you can get in warm garage and get it started thin the diesel with kerosene, about 2 gallons to 20 gallons of diesel. Then drive it for at least five miles so the kerosene gets circulated through the system. I've used gasoline to do this too, but only use about 1 gallon to 20 gallons of diesel.

Sounds like not all the glow plugs are working.It should run fairly smooth on a cold start if all of the glow plugs are working..Also you shouldn't drive off on a cold start with a diesel,Its really hard on the motors..At least give them 10 to 15 min on a cold start..The oil in them is a really thick oil and when there drove on a cold start theres no oil lubricating the internal parts and will cause the motor to seize up..You may already no this and dont mean you drive it as soon as you start it i just wanted to let you know..When you get alot of white smoke it could be two things,Theres water in the fuel which will make it not have much power die and smoke..But if it runs fine when its warm theres some bad glow plugs...Hope this helps you and have a great day

Ford 2002 f250 7.3 diesel won't start on cold mornings just replaced the cold start relay and still won't start...what else could it be?


It probably is your glow plugs which are controlled by the cold start relay. They burn out over time. This is normal. Haynes Diesel Engine Repair Manual, part 10330, will walk you through the diagnosis and replacement easily. It's about $20. Hope this helps.

How much should my Ford ranger 2.5td be smoking,is it normal for diesel engens to smoke.


Sometimes diesel engines will put out black smoke under extreme acceleration. Other than that, they shouldn't smoke. Black is excess fuel, White smoke is water and bluish is oil. White smoke on a cool morning is not necessarily a sign of a problem unless it happens every time you start it through a warm day. Hope this helps.

87 ford ranger wont start without starting fluid


It sounds like you aren't getting fuel out of the cold start injector... remove the injector when engine is cold and switch on ignition... you should get a fine spray pattern for a few seconds... if not then there is probably a problem with the cold start circuit (Temp sensor fault), or the injector is faulty. pull electrical connectors one at a time and look for corrosion... Hope this helps...;-)

1987 Ranger V6 - engine starts clanking like a diesel engine and starts backfiring thru the air intake box. turn off engine, feel backside of radiator and it is stone cold. randomly, the engine quiets down...


I have the same engine. I think when I had this problem it was the water pump going. I think that when it gets hot, the engine goes into a frenzy. I had lent someone my car and that is what greeted me when I got it back. I know changing the water pump is more difficult, but mine was 20 years old before I replaced it! Not too bad.
