Question about 2002 GMC Envoy

4 Answers

Won't start intermittently. Seems to happen when cold weather starts. Turn key on and no sound at all no clicks. Replaced ignition switch and battery last year. Has been ok until now. Service engine soon light is on. I suspect the security system or a stuck relay. The ignition bell rings 5 times after turned on. Is that a code ?

please address the entire question. there are other issues indicated in the question. Its easy to just say its the switch. I'm not convinced.

  • thevigie Nov 19, 2009

battery connections are clean. I checked everything. I don't have any issues with airbags ! What about the security system or a faulty relay ?

  • thevigie Nov 20, 2009

Rylee, this has happened several times over the last couple of years. I work on race cars. I have checked the battery terminals, etc. The car won't start so taking it to someone to read the codes is not very easy right now. The last time it did this I locked and unlocked it many times using the fob, the door switch and the key. It started ok a couple of days later. That is why I suspect the security system. How can I check this?

  • thevigie Nov 20, 2009

please address the possibility of a secutity system lockout

  • thevigie Nov 21, 2009

I thank all of you for your time and thought. I'm going to have to get it towed to a repair facility so the codes can be checked.

If you do have a security lockout then nothing can be done till you get the code so we have a direction to go. I really dont see a relay as being the issue As far as being intermittant on cold starts I would suspect a starter if it eventually starts without having to charge the battery. Smack the starter hard a few times while someone tries to start the vehicle. Use a hammer. If it reacts then you will have a direction to go

Are you really ready to thrw on a $100 or more part just because someone guessed. Electrical parts are not exchangeable. If your problem is ignition power related without testing we wont know. Since you didnt state weather or not you have a security code stored then I assume you havent got a scanner to check it. With no information to go on anyone can spend your money with no ramifications just to make the 3 dollors this site pays us. Now with that are you ready to start spending because I would suggest replacing the ignition again if noone is gong to test it. And if that didnt work then I would suggest the starter and when that didnt work I would suggest checking for codes because something is not allowing the stater to power up. You could go down to the starter

and jump the terminal. That is if you have a 12 volt The big one should have 12 volts on it and when cranking to small one goes to ground which is linked to the key switch. If you jump the starter and still no reaction then the starter is bad, If it cranks ok, if key is on the truck will start if the security is not enabled. If the security is enabled the fuel pump will not turn on.

You have computers that will throw codes if you have security or no power when cranking. You need to let us know if any codes exist. Are you really ready to throw parts at the car from the advice that someone that only gets 3 bucks to solve. We have thousands of dollars of equipment that still doenst easily find problems. Now the way I see it is you either poped a main fuse, or the ignition switch failed, or the starter failed. Or you have a security issue. If no security code is stored then we can further start diagnosing. We have to go on what you say and since you said you may have a security issue we need to address that first or we end up wasting everyones time.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Hi

The check engine light is on because ECM (Control Module) detected a fault with your car's system. ECM has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be looked at. You'll need to get the codes checked from a nearby dealer/mechanic.

However, as you are facing surge issue, it can be due to bad plug, bad fuel injector or a bad egr valve. Please try to start it in both park and neutral. Please check the starter relay under the hood. Disconnect the battery while checking all these things. Also check that there is no corrosion on the cables of the batteries. If so, put some hot water with baking soda to clear the mess. Check the transmission. Check the spark plug wires, fuel pump, crank angle sensor, PCM (Power Control Module), spinning engine, theft system failure and ignition switch Also try to jump start it. Also see this link for reference please---

Troubleshooting stalling engine

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

There are about a dozen things that turn the service engine soon light on. TAke it to auto zone and have them read the codes free. lights beep 5 times is due to problem in airbag controlling lights. Probel is correct about the airbag light problem, and Ayn, you did not buy one without airbags. There are multiple lights for the airbag system...each for a different purpose. The amber light with the key is for arming and disarming the passenger airbag ONLY. There should be another one just like it in the cluster (speedometer area). If not, that's the one that is burned out and causing the 5 tones to sound.
Here's a site that will explain everything you need to know about airbag lights and resetting the system.
http://www.airbagsolutions.com/

This website gives you the procedure for diagnosing and resetting airbag lights. See if your car is listed here. Although it’s a pay site ($14.95/day), it’s a lot cheaper than going to the dealer
http://www.airbagsolutions.com/vehicles_list.aspx

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident.
The flashing light on your car is telling the answer you need. On some vehicles, the light is flashing a two digit code. Once you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself. There are fairly easy procedures that most people are capable of repairing.
Airbagsolutions.com has the fault code charts to tell you what is wrong and how to fix it!

Some vehicle manufacturers accommodate systems without a scanner (like Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infinity, Honda, Acura, Ford, Lincoln, Mazda & Mercury) and some require a scan tool.

Check out these websites also for more info on airbag systems and the light.

Lastly, check your vehicle for recalls through this link also:

--------- The service engine soon light means that you car's computer has recognized something amiss and has recorded a 'code' in it's memory. Any auto repair shop would be able to plug into your car's computer, retrieve the code and tell you what it says. For a modest fee. Not a good idea to ignore this. get the codes checked first.then replace the faulty part. ----- This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.

Intermittent starting is a sign of the switch being bad, even though you already replaced it. If you can get it started take it to a parts store and have them scan your computer and it will tell you what is going on. They typically do not charge for this.

Also, check the connection at the battery, make sure cables are all tight and the ground cable is good and tight. If the ground cable is loose you wont hear clicking or anything. If there is any corrossion on the battery take a wire brush and brush it off. Or, you can pour coke on the posts and then rinse it off with water.

I didnt say it was just the switch. did you try the other suggestions included in the first response? Check your battery cables and make sure they are all good and tight and no corrossion on battery posts. Also, you need to have your engine scanned and the scanner tool will tell you what the problem is. Any parts store will do this fo you, I dont know of any that charge for this service.

the 5 rings is not a code that I have been able to locate.

  • Chris Yelton Nov 19, 2009

I called a GMC service department in Oklahoma City and they said that the beeping is normal it is running its cycle. They also said that it is possible that it no longer recognizes the chip in your key.

To reset the key you have to turn the key, but dont try to start, and let it sit for 10 minutes and then repeat that step for a total of 3 times. He said this will reset the chip and if it wont start after that then your switch is bad. He also said that aftermarket switches dont last long, however he was probably just pushing for you to buy a OEM switch.

  • Chris Yelton Nov 20, 2009

to reset the security system turn key on for 10 minutes then off and back on for another 10 minutes then off and back on for another 10 minutes

  • Chris Yelton Nov 21, 2009

go to a parts store and borrow their scanner..

The ones in Oklahoma City will take a deposit and when you return the scanner you get it back so it is still free. This will save you a tow charge and dealership fees.

My car would not start during cold weather, I replaced battery and starter, but did not fix problem. I found that the problem is the ignition switch, I could get it to work by banging around the ignition switch and holding the key in the start position.

A mechanic would check for voltage at the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch.
Could be a dead spot in the starter. Do the warning lights work correctly ?

is the engine grounded to the body? if so, you may have a key issue that's only going to get worse. your key is coded, black square ignition key right? $75.00 dealer only. sorry but it sounds like that's your problem. almost like a valet key. only works for short time and if you keep using it, it will blow the fuel pump$379.00 please do more research! hope this helps, and merry christmas from me and mine,to you and yours.

Mazda Tribute Intermittent Starting problem

I can think of 2 possibles,it could be a bad battery cable or an intermitent short in the starter solenoid, check or have the battery cables and there connections on both ends first not only are they a cheaper fix but the problem you describe sounds like a current flow issue.Test them with or have them tested with an ohmmeter they should show o ohms resistance, and while not attributed to the problem I do not reccomend using Bosch spark plugs of any variety, the best plugs for any Japanese vehicle are NGK's,this comes from my personal experience with them and other techs that I have worked with.

VAN WONT START

: Sounds like you have attacked the problem pretty well. Check the fuses. Do a "pin" check for power and ground to the ECM. When you replaced the ECM, did you use a new prom? If not, you could have a faulty prom. Check fuel pressure and using a Noid light check the pulse at the injectors. For your information, the injectors will have 12-volts and the computer momentarily grounds them to open the injector.
Your problems may be caused by a faulty ignition switch or starter solenoid.
Intermittent electrical problems are difficult to trace. We would suggest first checking the ignition switch and next the neutral safety switch
You are close to the right track but check the fuel pressure during the no start condition as you may have a faulty fuel pump. You also could have a vehicle speed sensor problem

Intermittent Starting problem

Check for good connections at the battery cables, Check the condition of the cables themselves and be sure that your fuse box is free from corrossion.
