Question about 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan

1 Answer

2001 dodge grand caravan, intermitten guage disfunction. Periodically the guages and accessories in the vehicle will cut in and out. If you pull over and restart sometimes this fixes it for a little while.

There has been issues with the solder joints on the PIN connection to the gauge cluster. The issue being that over time thru vibration and such one of these solder joints will fail (happened on our 1999) you can repair this though. You will have to remove all of the trim from around the driver's side dash board, this will include the trim towards the center of the dash. Once these pieces are remove you'll need to remove the gauge panel (I believe (4) allen head screws) carefully bring the panel and release the wire clip from it. (the wiring harness clip is held on by a small "red" plastic pin you'll need to pull back on to release) Looking at the back of the panel, where the plug was, carefully with plenty of light look for one of the pins to have a failed solder joint. It will be very faint however the failed joint will be a fine dark line around the pin. To correct use a small soldering iron and reheat this solder until it wants to flow, let it cool and reassemble. Often times when these PIN connections fail the ABS light will
illuminate; why though.I am uncertain

I hope this may have helped,
Tom
PS: If you check my profile you'll see I have helped others with this same issue, as I had to make this repair myself.
If this has helped, please let me know; Thanks!

1996 Dodge caravan--dash guages flicker

In responding to rbenjami, I am not proposing the same solution for all who claim to have a similar problem because I don't believe that that is the case. When the gauges flicker periodically it may be a case of a bad body computer, which is a big deal and may be covered by warranty beyond the normal 3 yr./36k miles. For those with issues related to use of seat warmers, that is not uncommon and should lead to discontinued use.
