Why does my heat only work when car is running?

This sounds like your heater fan is not working. You are only getting heat from the wind passing by your car? If so, then you need to get the heater fan looked at. Also when the engine is cold, check the antifreeze level.

There are fuses but they break for a reason. Usually a part called a blower motor resistor has shorted. Someone can use a fusebox diagram you can print off from Autozone.com when you enter your car and Register for free. Then scroll to the diagrams section and the fusebox and chassis wiring diagrams can be printed.

If someone rewired the car, you should have power to the fan once the engine is on. You can have a ductwork problem if they(Ductwork flaps) work on engine Vacuum, which can increase as the engine speeds up from idle.

You may have an automatic switch which senses heat before allowing the fan to run and its possible the thermostat is not functioning well enough to heat this switch up at idle. Then when you get moving, the engine makes more heat and the switch turns on. This system, if a Climate control system, is not working properly.

You need someone to look at this for you if you have no one. This site used to have a directory of affiliated mechanics. Try going to the site again and looking for local mechanics we recommend.

In our 1995 Chrysler Concorde, 3.3 liter engine, the heater fan remains on until fuse is pulled. No lights on the ATC. Could the ATC be bad or what should we check or replace? we can't do a scan...

Factory wiring diagrams or manuals --order from -- Helm.Com

Another source -- would be to go to a local shop that has ALLDATA
System & have them print what you need

I personally never buy any Haynes,Chilton etc for the reason
you have found out

Spend the big bucks,if your going to work on your own vehicles

My air conditioner/heater blower will not work on the 4th setting. Setting 1,2, and 3 do work. I have replaced fan speed switch and replaced the resistor. Any ideas?

You'll have to find the correct wiring diagram in order to trace down the fault in your system.. Once you obtain the wiring diagram you'll be able to see what else beside wire is between the #4 speed setting and the blower motor. My guess is you might find a high speed fan relay is triggered from the #4 fan switch setting, applying full battery voltage to the blower motor. If locating the appropriate diagram proves to be difficult you can try looking around the underhood and passenger compartment fuse panel to find a relay. Keep in mind not all relays are always in fuse boxes which makes the diagram important.

The blower motor resistor is probably corroded or shorted out .
