An honest mechanic if he had the replacment part at the ready would take 1 to 1.5 hours to do this job, its not hard. Good luck

if the rack and pinion was not leaking or causing problems. then he may of made a wrong move! if the rack was fine before, and you just lost power steering. then it is most likely the power steering pump or the lines that go from rack to the pump. good-day ! if a rack goes bad, you will get a bad steering problem or just bad steering.

Take the car to another mechanic. The steering is likely going stiff because the belt is loose, that's why it's squeaking and slipping on the power steering pump pulley. The mechanic should have checked and tightened the belt. The pumps rarely fail. If you have a gas leak, it must be repaired immediately and it depends what is wrong that will determine cost. Go to a smaller shop that has been around along time or get a referral from friends that have had good luck with a shop that does repairs, not just oil changes.

My barrings that hold the belt for my power steering came loose and my belt fell off. how do i put it back on?

I think I would have an experienced mechanic properly replace the power steering pump, replace the tensioner, then put it back together with a new serpentine belt.

Check the Power steering fluid for it will be noisy if low. The tensioner works off a very strong spring so if your belt is on it was not the mechcanics fault unless he nicked a hole in the power steering line somewhere. Check for leaks as well

1996 Ford Taurus just developed a power steering pump noise.

Make sure it is full of power steering fluid. Fords use generic power steering fluid you can buy at any parts store.Or you can try a power steering additive like Lucus and it may help as a last resort to replacing the pump .
