SOURCE: 1997 GMC Sierra Ignition Switch Replacement

take off the cover on the top and bottom of the steering column just behind the wheel. pop the tilt lever out simply just by grabbing it and give it a good tug. then once you have the new switch and you get in there your going to need an inverted torx socket to remove the small bolts that hold the switch to the column. do not move the gear on the new switch make sure it lines up exactly as the old one did!!!!!!!!!!!!

If wiring is good also I would say maybe a bad part. The brake light switch is suspect and yes you can get a bad one.

All your lights and brake lights and turn signals go through the turn signal switch. It jobs is to divide the lights turn signals and brake lights. One can test if the lights are going into the switch and out through the same connector where the turn signal switch comes out of the column.

its a long process, you need a steering wheel puller, once its off take the hazard button assembly out, take the turn signal loose, pull old ignition out, carefully install new one, and reverse procedure and always if u get confused i would highly recomend
