Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

87 Cherokee 2dr, Man Trans, 4.0L 170K miles but JUST CHANGED OUT THE ENGINE myself with one that has only 30K miles on it! Idle's great but slow on revving and TERRIBLE/SLOW ON ACCELERATION! note: new - plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, air filter, oil filter, oil pressure sensor. Old engine had a terribly loud knocking noise in the rear of the engine but still ran great. Didn't sound good. Any thoughts?

Flywheel is fine and working well with new 'used' engine that I installed with a new clutch and clutch slave cylinder.
New parts installed: Fuel Filter, Spark plugs, spark wires, cap, rotor, oil filter, air filter. Distributor really only has one way to go in and bolt's down to the engine.
Again - engine idles great and is very quiet. Just seems to respond very slow when revving the engine when sitting still and then it chugging when trying to accelerate in order to get up to speed to engage into the next gear.

The loud knock is the real worry here, did you make sure the flywheel wasn't cracked? if that is ok you have a engine bearing problem and the engine will fail very soon, a few questions, has the fuel filter been changed and the fuel pressure checked? this sounds like either low fuel pressure restricted exhaust or an ignition timing probem, check these things, do u have a repair manual?.

Why does my jeep turn off if I don't toggle the overdrive switch enough?

it stalls with foot in the throttle...... really.? try to say what you and car are doing at the od switch flips.. sure moving fast.
but doing what, up hill down, flat, acceleration, decel, or coasting?

ok, this can be real easy.
engine tuned up is 99%
ever heard of scan tool.
connect it, and log data (or person 2 watches) and log DTC and streaming data?
if the Magic relay called ASD drops the the engine stalls (this is its purpose) and if it did the SCAN TOOL tells you why it did.
every time...
asd class 101.:

is transmission stuck in 3rd gear, limphome.??
the trans mission will not stall a car. 99%
that is because the clutch has a stall speed.
and slips greatly at idle, say 800rpm is hot idle , so if say the trans solid locked into top gear. and you came NEAR a stop sign, coasting... and braking.. say.....
and as rpm dropped, the clutch will slip and no trans ever stalls the engine.99% unless the engine is super weak and misfiring hard.
or ASD DROPs !
that is why we scan to see ALL ERRORS> engine and trans.

My Jeep keeping shutting off, but if I pout it into gear it will stay running

2000 WJ jeep , USA
when STALLS only driving , any time , or just as I come to stop it stalls. or stalls parked only. my guess parked only.
which engine is there?
4.7L ?
what transmission, what A/T trans, 42rle or ?
mileage comp. like mine, it's useless. forget that. but dead battery reset that, and is of no matter.
questions are plenty on all cases: (cars are complex!)
the engine stalls.? sure.
in to gear means , Drive and Reverse right?
when you do that the PCM adds more air via the ISC idle speed control valve. and just my do that. and is good sign.

  1. besides stalling, does engine and trans work great , driving, like fast /slow, , hot/cold engine, , up hills too, fast?
  2. is the CEL lamp in dash on key on and off running.?
  3. did you check all fuses.
  4. what is miles on engine.
  5. when did it run perfect last, 1 week ago, 1year, 10 years?
  6. ever get and engine tune up this decade? spark parts and filters?
  7. is the ASD relay dropping out just before the stall>?
  8. is engine rpm below 800 RPM before the stall? hot engine.
  9. does engine reach and old full engine temp, 180F or more?
  10. use a scan tool and see all DTC errors yet, dont skip this.

Car maker says to change trans fluid every 100k, fluid manufacturer says every 30k ??????

Hello. Welcome to FixYa. Please allow me to assist you.
On your Matrix, if you have a transmission dipstick, you do not have 100,000 mile transmission fluid. All Toyota vehicles that have the long-life fluid do not have a dipstick installed.
We recommend that the ATF be drained and refilled at 30K miles, and flushed at 60 K mile intervals. Using this maintenance regimen, we never rebuild any transmissions.
Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance. If my assistance proves useful, please consider a 4 thumbs rating for me. I'd greatly appreciate it. Have a great day.

Transmission wont shift after 40 mph sometimes it works find but when you slow down to 40mph it **** and the rpm stay up

I had the same problem, so I added "Trans X" from the auto store, and after a few miles the trans started shifting. Seems gunk get into the shifting mechanism. Also a trans service could be the problem. Should have a trans service every 30k. Keeps trans clean. Try it , it worked for me

they say 30 to 50k. i myself prefer 30k especially in older engines. usually i check the plugs at 10k to make sure they look alright. you changed wires too right? newer engine can go 50k60k.

Stuck in park

Grinding noises are never a good thing. You didn't say if stick or automatic but I believe your'e talking about an auto. Grinding always indicates some degree of "hard part" damage which requires trans overhaul.
I'd ignore service intervals and change trans fluid and filter at least every 30k. You have done well at 206k but perhaps could have streched it a bit further. Always follow severe service intervals (the manufacturers definition of severe is just about anything other than being parked in the garage) If well maintained, you are the best judge of your vehicles condition and expected lifespan. Consider any previous repair work and ongoing problems (if any) when making decisions. If you have a 4.0 engine I've seen many of these go well over 300K. !!! Good luck with it.
