Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

My locks are electric and they no longer automaticaly lock when you put the care in drive. Also the lights on the inside are supposed to dim when you put the car in drive. They stay on unless the car is moving and every time I put the brake on they come back on. Also I can no longer lock the car from the inside. I have to use my key button to get the car to lock. The horn is also supposed to honk one time when I lock the car with the key clicker and it doesn't do that anymore. This all started happening at the same time and I need to know what it would intell to get it fixed and if there is anyone who specifically works on the electrical system in my area. I am a single female and I don't want to be taken to the cleaners on this car. I just had about $3000.00 worth of work done to it and I want to keep the car, but this is getting to worry me that the car will leave me stranded as to run the battery down.

2003 Sunfire Door Locks unlock when I turn my lights on.

Check your chassis ground strap. There should be a braided cable, or a cable similar to your battery cable, that runs from somewhere on the engine to the chassis. The reason you have multiple items lighting up or working when you try to operate one item is because it is trying to get a ground through another source.

Dim interior lights, power locks wont work......

Try looking at your battery. Check the cables to make sure they are tight and clean. Brush the corrosion off with a wire brush. Now, if you have a wiring schematic, find the ground for the interior lights and clean it up too. Oh, put vasoline on it, and the battery cables, to keep them corrosion free. Check the other grounds in the car cabin too.

Any chance the batteries are dead in both of them? There's a little light on your key fob. Try locking/unlocking and watch the light (it's red) if it's dim or not lighting up then your battery (inside your key fob) is dead. They take CR2032 watch batteries.

1997 Jetta GL Alarm

First to turn off the alarm you simply put the key into the drivers door and turn it to unlock the door twice, this is the factory setting to turn off activated Volkswagen alarm. As for the power locks they are air activated, in the trunk near the latch there should be a small electric motor that drives a small air pump with air lines running to all your locks. If this electric motor as worn out your locks will not operate, simple fix replace the motor. I'd try a used one first from a scrap yard to make sure but always check to see if there is power to the motor (you will need another person with a test light to perform this job). Let me know if this works. Vdubs 4-ever !

The electric motor that pulls the lock button up and down has failed, you will need to pull the door panel to replace it. Yes it is fairly common.
