The quick solution until you get it fixed is use the emergency fuel door release in the trunk through the circle access hole. You must pull the cable down not towards you. and you must use much more force than you would expect.
The actual problem can be any one of these...
cable, solenoid, actuator, switch, cable plugged into switch.
SOURCE: Gas tank door not opening
Hi there,
Have you looked in the trunk on the side that the gas tank is on? There may be a fuel release switch. Couple of other things to try is to unlock all your doors from the inside of your car and/ or try pushing in and out on the gas door over and over until, hopefully, it triggers the device. I hope that will help you. I will keep trying to find the answer. Let me know. Have a great night.~MWD

Hold both buttons the Open and the Lock on your remote key for about 60 seconds, it should turn the lights inside the car and the problem should be fixed.
It worked on my Honda Accord 2004

There is A Spring or Spring type Mechanism At the Door that POPS the Door Open Once the Button has been Pushed . And when you Close the Door This Same SPRING ACTION Sorta Fights Against your Closing it. Well it Sounds to me as if this Spring Action is Not Working Properly,
Take a CLOSE Look at this and Be sure This is Working Properly, My References Do NOT Go into DETAIL on this so its Kinda a Common Sense Approach to it.
SOURCE: How do I open the gas tank door on the Chevy HHR...
There is no inside release on the HHR. Simply press in on the rear of the gas fill door and it will "pop" open. Make sure you press it in again when you close it...
