Hello goretiremari.
When I see this happen on these vehicles the first thing I check is the temperature sensor. They tend to go open circuit, the computer sees an engine temperature of - 40. It then dumps fuel in according to that temperature as a cold engine requires more fuel.
The sensor is mounted at the front of the intake manifold near the thermostat.
Hope this cures your problem.
Thank you for using FixYa !

The fuel pressure regulator diaphragm could rupture and add fuel but is more common issue with the Ford vehicles.

  • FUBAR Nov 19, 2009

Should also add that the bad temperature sensor will not necessarily turn on your check engine light.

  • FUBAR Nov 20, 2009

Dang it all anyway. I was hoping that would cure you up.
Next thing is to check the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor.
This devise reads manifold vacuum and turns it into an electrical signal to the computer. If the hose to it is ruptured or restricted will over fuel. Map sensor problems were also somewhat common.
Looking into the engine bay it is mounted to the left of the throttle body. It has three wires and a vacuum hose going to it.
    Hope this helps you out.

Fuel pump is electonic regulator if bad it will not pump correct amount of gas to engine Ck caborator it has a float vowel if it sticks this would cause excessive Gas flow.

First of all, why is it flooding?

Second, when trying to start it, hold down the gas pedal as this will give it maximum airflow which will keep it from flooding further (Don't pump the pedal though!!!!). If it still won't start after multiple attempts, then if you have a torch, you can clean out the fuel in each cylinder by removing the spark plug and firing the torch in one by one. Be careful not to melt any rubber components and watch out for the backfire from the cylinders. You may have to fire the torch in multiple times to each one till all of the gas is burnt up. Let me know how this works out for you.

Sometimes when I drive several miles and then stop. When I try to start it again, the engine turns over but won't start It is like it floods itself.

Have you tried to hold the gas pedal to the floor ? Ford's have clear flood mode strategy programmed into the PCM , if you hold pedal to the floor the engine computer disables the fuel injectors . If it is flooded holding to the floor will clear it out .

1997 sl2 satun started with rough idol now won't start . cranks over and floods. has new fuel filter & air filter

Check the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum hose off it, If it smells of gas, Replace the regulator. Diaphragm broke and is flooding the engine threw that vacuum line. You'll also need to replace the spark plugs. Gas will foul them out also.

Engine flooding

Check the fuel pressure. The pressure regulator may have gone bad and is delivering too much pressure to the fuel rail, thereby flooding the engine.

Fluids out when you try to start

double posted, and fluids? you mean FLOODS.
see previous post,
there are other ways to flood any motor.
one other is (iSC /IAC devices are stuck closed) gummed up.
this cause no starting air, no air means flooding.
I cant see your car, and see if starting with 10% throttle solves the flood, but you can.
also WOT cranking, cuts all fueling and can not flood and will start any flooded engine.
but if this still floods, now, that is bad injectors. leaking.
WOT cuts injection pulses dead, and no fuel flows, cranking.
knowing these facts on EFI makes finding causes easy.

98 camaro will crank but wont start after i let it sit for about 15 minutes and try again it will turn over but it doesnt always do this it only does it every now and then.

You could have a leaking fuel injector that is causing it not to start after it sits for a while the engine cylinder may become flooded with fuel and when you go to start it again it will not crank because the engine is hydrolocked. Check the oil to see if it smells like fuel. also remove the spark plugs to see if they are fuel soaked. If you find one. You'll know that's your problem and you will need to change your injectors

Eengine wont start has gas and spark?

Does it sound like its spinning or turning faster than normal? If so could just be flooded. Try cranking engine with excellerator 3/4 way down at 10 sec intervals with 2 min brake in between. These cars have always seemed to flood easy. And the air intake system is so enclosed it cant really dry out easy. I try that 3-4 times if it does seem like its trying to start or getting better than Id say tow to mechanic. Possible coil problems too? But seen alot of them flood out.

Car is getting harder to start

If you think the engine is flooded hold the gas pedal about half way down, while you try to start it. Be ready to release the pedal as soon as it starts. That tells the computer that you think the engine is flooded and it will cut back on the fuel delivery, until the engine starts. You may have a bad fuel pressure regulator. I'm sorry I don't know too much about Subaru's.
