Inside the transmission are items called overrunning clutches or spragues. What they are is pretty much a bearing that only turns in one direction. I'm pretty sure there is one inside the converter as well. If a sprague goes bad, it will suddenly let go and slip, then re-engage. A good transmission shop can usually recognize this on a test drive and additionally can attach a "flight recorder" to the unit to eliminate the possibility of a diagnostic error.
If the problem is in the converter, and no metal or clutch material is found in the transmission itself, you may be able to just replace the converter. However, if there is debris in the pan, the sprague may not have been the first item to fail but has failed due to contamination of another internal part that has failed. Then, a rebuild is in order.
Of course, I'm assuming that the fluid is full and is not burned, and that you looked at that already. Converter sprague is inside the converter and cannot be replaced . Ones found inside the transmission are on the shaft inside and cannot be changed without taking the unit completely apart. Would make no sense to change it without changing the internal clutches as well.!!

I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that has a strange intermittent problem. Sometimes it runs fine, but sometimes the tachometer goes ape wild not giving a proper reading of engine RPM. When this...

Regarding your shifting problems: I replaced the output shaft speed sensor and fixed a 97 GC V8 Ltd that would not shift out of low gear - this is externally mounted on/near the outside of the tail shaft. I replaced a throttle position sensor (mounted on throttle body - a likely culprit) on an 87 Wag Ltd 4.0 and that fixed shifting problems similar to those you have described. Each of these parts is in the $25 price range - worth a try if you haven't ruled them out.

How to shift into 4 LO in 2004 jeep grand cherokee

The correct procedure should be described in detail in your owner/operation manual.
For a 2004, 90 % sure that if it's a quadra trac you have to immobilize the vehicule, put your transmission shifter to neutral keeping foot on the brake obviously, engage the low on transfer case pulling the transfer case shifter, engage the transmission to drive
If it's a select track, normally you have to keep the vehicule moving very slowly (2 mph), move the transmission shifter to neutral, push the transfer case shifter to the right and pull it firmly. Once transfer case engaged, put back the transmission shifter to drive.
It could take few seconds to engage and disengage depending on the temperature and road condition. Do not try it on dry surface (preferable on mud, snow and wet surface). Drive at low speed because you will feel that it's very low geared.
By the way, follow the reverse process to reestablish normal mode

Hope it will help

Jeep grand cherokee transmission clunk

well then it sounds to me as if you need a transmission replacement...a flush or service at this point won't do you any good, as the transmission is using the contamination in the fluid to build pressure. so if you flush it all away, then the new fluid is way too thin to build any pressure...just replace your transmission....

2000 grand cherokee transmission problem

Transmission shift points are controlled by the vehicle computer. Take your Grand Cherokee to a Jeep/Chrysler dealer to have the computer checked and possibly update the computer firmware.

Clunking sound between 30 and 35 mph. Doesn't happen all the time. Sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car.

Check the U-joints. (Vehicle parking brake on, wheel chocks to insure safety. Transmission in neutral. Try to turn driveshaft one way, then the other.

Be sure wheel stud nuts are tight.
