Could be the CEM which is the main computer in the whole car. or it could be a communication fault in the CAN network

Hi there!! i also have a volvo s60 d5 with the same problem!! the car just stopped and there was no engine management light on on the dash, we got the car started again but it just stops after a few minutes! if the engine management light shows when you turn the ignition on then the car will start but if its not then it wont!! we've had the diagnosis guy out to it with his laptop and the car ran for 35 minutes then stopped again and he lost all communication with the car! after 10 minutes the light on the dash came on an he was able to talk to it again and the laptop said that the ECU lost communication with the CEM unit. We got the ECU sent away, tested and even changed but the car is still the same!!!! We just need to know too if it is the CEM unit because £800 is alot to spend if its not that!!! So it looks like we've both got the same problem!! we'll keep intouch!! Michael

Hi! We seem to have similar problem. For me my Volvo s80 2.0T shows break light then ABS and gives thud like I have been hit from the back. I hear some relay clicks under the dash and the DIM goes dead. Headlamps turn on and when stop and switch off the car it will not start till I remove a battery terminal. I took car to dealer each time this has happened and he has tried everything including reinstall the network software, ABS module and the CEM. Only once we saw a CEM internal error. The SRS Light and engine service messages comeup when this happens. A few days ago when this happened I took car to dealer and their computer could not communicate with the car until a reset was done by removing battery terminal. Dealer says it is the CEM which needs replacement. IS there part number for the CEM? I know it is expensive but I have no choice want to try it out then I will report!

My 08 volvo c30 wont start my drive belt thorn apart and all the lights on dash came on change the belt but now it wont start

By drive belt do you mean the accessory drive belt ? Or are you referring to the timing belt ? A broken accy belt should not cause the car to not start unless the belt slapped around and broke something in the engine area. Check all around and under the front of the engine for damaged wires or wire connections to engine sensors that may have been damaged by the slapping belt. If its the timing belt your talking about then you need a mechanic .

My 91 volvo 740 won't start

Could be that there is a clog at the tank-there is a screen there- can be accessed through access panel behind rear seat- also try taking off fuel line at engine and starting engine--if there is fuel present then I would rule out the tank screen problem. Good luck--let me know if that helps. C

1996 volvo 960 engine turn off suddenly when I was driving

it may be a fuel pump fault. Cutting out and restarting is a classic sign of a failing fuel pump.

Here in the UK the VOlvo 960 is a 3 litre car (may be a different model to the USA version of the 960) and has 2 fuel pumps. One is situated in the tank and lifts the fuel into the pipeline system. The 2nd fuel pump is located underneath the car alongside the fuel filter underneath the passenger side (UK) and gives the fuel a boost to shove it up to the engine.

To check fuel pressure, find the pipe that goes to the injectors ... there usually is a connector where the metal pipe connects to the flexible rubber pipe. Undo the connector and switch the ignition on ... fuel should spray out at high pressure .. .high pressure .. not small squirts and dribbles.

Fuel pumps are damn expensive. It could also be a sensor at fault - like a crankshaft sensor. The cheapest way to get it sorted is to ask a workshop to identify the fault for you (you can do any work required) - they can check the sensors and electrics on their computer. Changing parts one by one to try and cure a fault can work out damn expensive .... get the fault identified for you first. Its worth the money ..

I think there are still photos of UK Volvo 960 fuel pumps on my website at :

91 volvo 240 won't start after long trips/multiple short trips

If you mean that when you try and start it the engine actually turns over but does not start, then check out the following info (I had a similar problem on my 1989 Volvo 240. It would start fine sometimes, other times it would not start even though it would crank) . It turned out to be the fuel pump relay.
When you try starting your car and you can not hear the fuel pump turned on (sound coming from the left underside of the car in front of the left rear tire), do the following if you think this is your issue (no cost for trouble shooting and takes 10 minutes to do):
The fuel pump relay is behind the access panel under the glove box. The panel is easy to remove - just unscrew each of the 5 panel knobs/fasteners a quarter turn and the panel comes out/down.  The fuel pump relay is a white plastic cartridge with a wire harness going to it. Just unclip it from the metal clip that retains it and leave it hanging there. When the car doesn't start and just cranks, lean over and tap the relay while you are trying to start the car (tapping it shakes the contacts inside that would normally switch over to complete the circuit when it is energized). If this is your issue and you can repeat the solution by tapping the relay when starting the car, buy a new one (I got mine at for around $14) and kept the old one in the trunk just in case.
Hope this helps.

1994 Volvo 850 2.4L Auto transmission

Clear your engine and transmission codes, its a small box in the pass side engine compartment right behind the headlight. Search "Bay 13 Volvo" and that has all the information to check and clear the codes. It also has a list of what the codes mean to help you.
