Hello, I have a 1995 Audi 80 V6 that keeps overheating. As a cheap temporary solution my mechanic bypassed the aircon which seemed to work at the beginning but the problem has returned. There seems to be...

Low engine coolant can keep temperature sensors from working correctly. Air or combution gasses being forced into the cooling system from a blown head gasket or cracked head can cause the same symptoms.

If you want to know if the temperature sensor is working, you must first be certain that the rest of the cooling system is working and only then can you determine if the sensor is "lying" to you. The actual engine temperature should be checked with an infrared thermometer and compared to the temperature sensor data in the onboard computer.

There is a coolant temperature sensor for the computer and there is a separate coolant temperature sending unit for the gauge. Comparing the two and verifying with an infrared thermometer is the best way to figure out what is going on.

How to Diagnose Your Engines Skip

Sometimes it's easy to tell if your engines got a skip. Other times its not so evident that a skip is what's causing your engine problems. Even when your know its a skip, deciding on which cylinder is the problem. This how to makes finding that problematic skip easy as pie.
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
infrared thermometer
Step 1
First thing you need to do is get yourself a infrared thermometer. Sounds fancy but they are not all that expensive, you can find them for under 50 dollars. These things are handy for so many things, trust me you will wonder how you ever got along without one.

Step 2
Now you'll be putting the laser of the thermometer on the exhaust headers where they meet up to the head so make sure you have a line of site to all of your header pipe ends. This works on manifolds as well but not as good. Its still the easiest way to find a skip either way.

Step 3
Now just locate the skip. To do that start the engine and quickly go under the hood with your infrared thermometer. Check each cylinder temperature, the cylinder with the skip will be cooler than the others around it. This works great because it will show you if you have a dead skip or just a cylinder that is running a little cold, all in a matter of mins. Information like this is very valuable for fine tuning and getting the most out of your engine.

My 2001 Audi A6 displays service sign in the digital display when i start it and then it goes off. Do i need to be concerned about it.

this shouldnt be a problem, most cars will show something similar when started, this is usually for one of two reasons, its a test to let you know that all the lights and displays are working, and two when you first start your car, the computer doesnt see any oil pressure and momentarily turns on the check engine/ service light, but will go off when the computer gets a pressure reading. hope i was able to help!

You are over the average at 200k miles, and it is probably just the thermometer, have you ever overheated? Rule of thumb is that if you have ever overheated, you need to replace the thermometer. To tell you the truth, you can get away without having one. Just make sure that the car isn't overheating, because you don't have a working temp gauge to tell you it is. If it were me, I would wait until the car has to go to the shop again, then ask them to look at it, probably nothing.

Good luck!

2004 Audi A4 misfire

it is always a good idea to stay with o.e.m parts and yes there is updated parts in the newer coils. and yes the M.A.F will also cause misfire faults but will not make check engine light flash or make car shake and shudder. also check you wire harness going to your coils make sure your ground wires are not cracked. That could be the main culprate. good luck hope this helps

I would have the cooling fan checked, and have the thermostat changed. An overheated thermostat (overheating caused by something else) will cause problems in the future.

My Audi 98 2. 8l car is always overheating

Hi Counchcharles
Your service displays have to be reset with the correct electronic equipment....When you chage the engine oil the computer management system will have to be told...thats the job of the scanner....go to a service centre and have them cancel it for you.
The over heating problem is nothing to do with that though.....Check to see if you have any leakage....open the pressure cap only when the engine is cold....best is first thing before start up in the morning....check to see if you need topping up....if you do, it'll mean you have a leakage....Check the entire radiator and hoses where they go from the rad into the engine and ventilation system for stains from the coolant....If you can't find any look at the thermostat....If you remove it, replace with anew unit, do not dis-guard it also check the pressure cap and if needs be replace....Good luck
Best regards Johngee10
